It is not obtained merely by quantity, but by conferring empowerments after making a commitment, so that the lineage of vows can develop, they say. Regarding the common Bodhisattva vows, it is said in the Lo chen commentary on vows that they arise in the context of body, speech, and mind, but if it is in accordance with the arrangement of the three vows, it seems acceptable, but I have not seen such a statement in this regard. In general, the types of vows are infinite, but if summarized, they can be classified into two as the way to practice, generate Bodhicitta, as it is said in the Clear Light Commentary: If you do not remember in the three times, how can you enter the Great Vehicle Mantra? As it is said, one should remember in the six times and not abandon it, that is, based on the view of realizing the purity of mind's nature, the two-fold Bodhi, one should constantly familiarize oneself with Samadhi and not deviate from it. For the unsurpassed Bodhicitta, keeping the mind in a state free from elaboration, like the Suchness Samadhi of the generation stage and completion stage of ultimate Bodhicitta, and through familiarity, whatever arises from the generation stage and completion stage, know it as the play of mind's nature, the single mandala of the Victorious Ones, this is the conventional Bodhicitta, there are two types, successively the two minds of profound and vast. For the sentient beings to be tamed, their way of appearing is clinging and inverted, in order to bring these two minds to the ultimate, so that the to-be-tamed ones quickly achieve, the Buddhas with their own extremely pure mind stream of bliss

The wisdom of the Dharmakaya, the Akanishta of the two truths united, manifests in the form of the dependent and the relied upon, appearing as a deity and being blessed. However, since the impure appearances are the basis of confusion for sentient beings, one must actually show and emanate a pure appearance that is the opposite of that. If one understands and meditates in this way, both supreme Bodhicitta will gather there, as the wise and accomplished ones of the past have said. Here, even when primarily meditating on conventional Bodhicitta, one should not consider appearances to be self-existent, but rather meditate on the mandala of illusory wisdom, which is the ultimate conventional. One should meditate with the essence of ultimate Bodhicitta, with the deity of appearance having emptiness-wisdom as its life force. When settling into ultimate Bodhicitta, it is not the same as meditating on the emptiness of the non-inherent nature of ordinary appearances such as pillars and vases. Although one can see purity in the truly existent, one cannot see purity in the impure. Therefore, unlike that, here, all the elaborations of the pure mandala are gathered back into a single bindu of ultimate luminosity, and one meditates on the nature of all appearances, free from the two negations, the self-nature free from elaboration, thus meditating without elaboration. Therefore, one should meditate with the essence of conventional Bodhicitta. In this way, Bodhi-

Just as fences are set up to protect crops, it seems that there are various ways to increase and multiply for this purpose. Secondly, regarding the object of veneration, the Peaceful Union Tantra states, "The empowerment of liberation from the tantra is itself shown." Therefore, empowerment, explaining the tantra, and teaching the essential instructions are all ways to show respect. Whichever lama bestows the kindness of the Vajrayana teachings should be regarded as inseparable from all Buddhas, and one should strive to make offerings with all things. The way in which the lama is equal to all Buddhas is that all Buddhas enter into the body, speech, and mind of the Vajra Master, and with one intention, they bless the student's lineage. Vajrasattva himself has promised this. As it says in this very text: "If you make offerings with the five powers and enjoyments, you are offering all the distant mandalas of the outer and inner tantras, and others. What need is there to mention the near mandala? All transgressions will be purified." And so on, there are many. Considering this, it is also said in Buddha Samyoga: "The teacher who performs the unsurpassed, by offering well to Vajrasattva, what merit has he not done? What austerities has he not practiced?" And so on, the mantra vehicle has repeatedly stated that there is no other method equal to this for beings to quickly complete the accumulation of merit. Regarding the ways to serve with offerings, there are many doors, such as the two kinds of material offerings and reverence, bathing, anointing, massaging, attending, and acting according to instructions. If we consider the main object of veneration, it is as explained in the Peaceful Lineage Tantra, but in general, the lama who is venerated, in addition to the lama who teaches secret mantras, there is also the lama who teaches the instructions of Sorjang (transliteration), which is not contradictory. For example, if one disparages any of the Sutras and Tantras, it will cause a root downfall of mantra. It does not require a secret mantra teaching, but the mantra teaching itself, or other philosophical tenets of the Sutras and Treatises of the Sutra side. Reviling the Dharma is the sixth root downfall for mantra practitioners. Therefore, Damtsik Saltrala states that the distinctions of lamas shown here and the ways to venerate them are sixfold. In general, the guide who turns the wheel of Dharma for many beings, and who has also received a little of the Dharma's kindness, is the common lama, like a king who protects the country.
