It is like base metal gradually turning into gold. Putting a precious Cintamani jewel and an ordinary stone together will not instantly turn them into gold. The path of liberation that gradually turns into gold is only different in speed compared to the previous methods, but there is no difference in the ultimate result. Regarding this, there are also gradual and sudden aspects. Therefore, the path of liberation is a gradual path compared to the previous methods, but within it, there are also sudden and gradual aspects. An example of the sudden is like King Indrabhuti who was liberated during the empowerment. As it says in the 'Definitive Summary': 'Supreme diligence, etc.' An example of the gradual is like Lingrepa, the accomplished one who attained the realization of the path of seeing in one week. If we explain the gradual in a little more detail, as it says here: 'The object possessed of the characteristics of knowing and entering, the cause and condition that ripen the fruit, that which becomes powerful, is known as the field of the Vidyadharas.' There are three characteristics: the view, which is the characteristic of knowing the cause; the samadhi, which is the characteristic of entering the condition; and the result of accomplishing the path, which is the four Vidyadharas. First, regarding the explanation of the view, which is the characteristic of knowing the cause, it says in the 'Stages of the Path': 'The meaning of the basis and the establishment of reason.' Among these, there are the measurable, the reason, and the tenets. First, the measurable is: the appearance of samsara and nirvana as two, the clinging to clinging, and the imputations, which are called the basis of imputation or the measurable in this context. As it says in the 'Detailed Explanation': 'Measure from the very object of imputation.' So, are samsara and nirvana not measurable? They are not measurable because samsara is a phenomenon of impermanence and suddenness, so it cannot be measured. And nirvana is not an object of consciousness, so it is not established as measurable. As the former says: 'The past is not an object, how can it be a measurable object? If measured by the appearance of the past, then it initially becomes hidden.' Second, if we explain the reason in a little more detail, there are the reasons of the five things that appeared previously, the reasons of the five ways that appeared subsequently, and the reasons of the five words. First, the reasons of the five things are: when appearing previously, the five kayas manifest their respective dharmata to their respective retinues.

It is to show the meaning of realization here. That is, the Teacher, the Dharmakaya, communicates with the retinue, the Ocean of Wisdom, through the speech of the Dharmakaya, the unborn meaning; the Sambhogakaya communicates with the retinue, the Ocean of Maturity, through the speech of the Sambhogakaya's intention; the Nirmanakaya communicates with the retinue, the Ocean of Faith, through the speech of the all-pleasing Brahma's voice; the Vajrakaya communicates with the indivisible Vajra retinue through the speech of sound and emptiness indivisible, like thunder; the Abhisambodhikaya communicates with the retinue, the Ocean, through the speech of the Abhisambodhi's reasoning and blessing. For example, it is like showing gold directly to someone who wants to see gold. As the Lamrim says: "Therefore, seeing gold is like gold." Second, the determination of the five subsequent methods is that the five bodies that have appeared before are the meaning of the sign that is consistent with the way of speaking. That is, the speech of the Dharmakaya symbolizes the unborn, like the sky; the speech of the Sambhogakaya is like the actual appearance of the image in the mirror; the speech of the Nirmanakaya is like the speech of the all-pleasing Brahma's voice; the Vajra speech is like the sound and emptiness indivisible thunder; the speech of the Abhisambodhi is the speech of reasoning and blessing. As the Lamrim says: "The perfectly enlightened Buddha, the Teacher, to the retinue who are tamed by the five bodies, the five speeches are taught, and that is the only way to determine and measure." Third, the determination of the five words is that the five methods mentioned above are actually expressed in words. As the Lamrim says: "The nature of appearance, the word of self-appearance, the word of hidden meaning and the word of guidance, the word of desire and the Vajra word, are indicated by the word of self-awareness and manifestation." So, if you ask why seven speeches arise here when they do not arise from the five bodies, it is because the nature of appearance and the word of self-appearance are included in the speech of the Dharmakaya, and the desire and the hidden meaning are included in the speech of the Sambhogakaya. If you summarize them, there are two determinations: the determination of the four bodies that show the meaning of no judgment, and the determination of the Nirmanakaya that shows the meaning of judgment. The first is that the so-called Teacher who cannot be judged is that all dharmas abide in the essence of Bodhi, so the object to be judged and the wisdom to judge are not completely separated, so it is free from the expression of words. The Sutra says: 'Victorious'
