That which abides therein is said to be the Essence of the Sugata, and this also comes from the profound Sutras of common definitive meaning. As the Samadhiraja Sutra says: "That which is pure, clear, and luminous, The very nature of being unperturbed and unconditioned, Is the Essence of the Sugata, The very Dharma-nature that has always been." And as the Buddha Avatamsaka Sutra says, using the example of the silk of three thousand great thousand worlds: "O sons of the Victorious Ones, the wisdom of the Tathagatas, immeasurable mind, and the wisdom that closely nourishes all sentient beings, are present without exception in the continuum of all sentient beings." And as the Sutra of No Increase and No Decrease says: "Shariputra, that which is called the ultimate truth is a synonym for the realm of sentient beings. That which is called the realm of sentient beings is a synonym for the Essence of the Tathagata." And it says: "Whether the Tathagatas come or do not come, all these sentient beings constantly possess the Essence of the Sugata." In their commentary, the Uttaratantra Shastra, it says: "The body of the Fully Awakened One is undiminishing, And because thatness is undifferentiated, And because of the presence of the lineage, all embodied beings Constantly possess the Sugata-garbha." It shows that mind-nature possesses the Essence of the Sugata through three reasons. And again, from the former text: "That which dwells within the husk of afflictions, Should be shown by means of examples." It shows it by means of nine examples. The nine examples are: "Buddha image, lotus, bee and honey, Husk, essence, impure gold, Treasure in the earth, sprout, fruit, and husk, Buddha image in tattered cloth, king in a vile woman's womb, Precious image in the earth, thus it is said, Showing the Tathagata-garbha to sentient beings, Obscured by adventitious stains of affliction." Thus it is said to show it briefly through nine examples, and to show it through eleven categories of extensive explanation, and so on. However, here, to summarize it all, that nature of mind abiding inseparably from truth, in terms of its own nature being Buddha, is said to be the realm of the Sugata-garbha. From the empty aspect of that nature of mind, the qualities of the Dharmakaya appear, and from the appearing aspect, the qualities of the Rupakaya are perfected, but in between the uncleared impurities

Since it cannot perform its own function, it is the source of its own nature and the author of both samsara and nirvana, so it is the Alaya-jnana. Temporarily, from the perspective of being related to the defilements of afflictions, it is the Tathagatagarbha with defilements. Within the category of "etc.," the Kriya practitioners view it as the true nature of the self, the Upaya and Yoga practitioners view it as the mandala of the Vajra realm in the Akaniṣṭha of the conventional from the blessing of the ultimate non-conceptual, the Maha Yoga practitioners view the nature of mind, the inseparability of truth and falsehood, as the supreme Dharmakaya, the Anu Yoga practitioners view the mandala of the son's root Bodhicitta, which is the non-duality of space and wisdom, and the Ati Yoga practitioners view the essence, nature, and compassion, etc., as the basis to which any term applies. If it is generally established without comparing it to any aspect of the three aspects of the base, path, and fruit, then no name or term will arise other than nature or reality. If it is compared to any aspect of the three aspects of the base, path, and fruit, then it is established as the base in relation to the state of not abandoning even a slight amount of defilement; it is established as the path in relation to the state of purifying defilement; it is established as the fruit in relation to the state of being free from all defilements. The definition is: Why does it become the continuum of the base or cause? Because it is grasped and not grasped by the causes of means, it can accomplish samsara and nirvana, so it is the source or cause of both samsara and nirvana; and it remains constantly unchanged from sentient beings to Buddhas like a vein of pure gold, so it is called continuum. Lord Maitreya said: 'How it was before, so it is later, it is the unchanging Dharma nature.' The Sutra of Three Distinctions says: 'Because all dharmas arise without exception through two kinds of terms, it is called the base.' And so on. If the base continuum is classified, from what was said earlier: 'The base of essence and the base of imputation.' Therefore, there are two types: the base of reality essence and the base of mistaken imputation. Among them, the first explanation is the base of reality essence: The nature of mind, the Tathagatagarbha that is naturally pure, is like a precious jewel that purifies defilements, which is what the base of reality essence indicates. Its meaning is, for example,
