May (he) pass away. May (he) attain the state of Buddha, free from death and sorrow! Please satisfy those exhausted by thirst with nectar! Remembering your excellent words spoken in the past, I will renounce from this sacred city. Due to this urging, (the Bodhisattva) looked in the four directions of Kapilavastu (now in Nepal). At the east gate, he saw the suffering of old age; at the south gate, the suffering of sickness; at the west gate, the suffering of death; and at the north gate, the beautiful and pleasing sight of a monk wearing saffron robes. Because of this, he asked his father, the king, for permission to renounce, but the king did not allow it. When the army surrounded the four sides of the city, Indra caused the army to fall into a drunken sleep. The noble one, with strength and diligence, departed quickly. (In order) to liberate sentient beings from the dangers of suffering, and in order to manifest the supreme enlightenment, now is the time to renounce. The Bodhisattva placed his son Rāhula in the womb of Sāhomā, mounted the steed Kanthaka, whose four hooves were lifted by four sons of gods, and together with the attendant Chandaka, proceeded to the pure stupa of Śuddhodana. He cut off his own hair and naturally completed the vows of a monk. Then, the attendant Chandaka and the steed Kanthaka were turned back. Indra offered saffron robes, which (the Bodhisattva) accepted. The gods of the Thirty-Three (Trāyastriṃśa) invited the hair knot, and even today it is known as the Hair Knot Festival. Then, from Lhaksyong, the son of Ringsyong, and Lingshu, the son of Gyutsal She, he listened to the samadhi of the Peak of Existence. In order to show future generations that it is not necessary to take severe physical asceticism to practice enlightenment, and in order to refute the attachment of the non-Buddhist extremists, (the Bodhisattva) practiced austerities for six years on the banks of the Nerañjanā River, eating only one grain of rice each day for the first two years, drinking only one drop of water each day for the middle two years, and eating nothing at all for the last two years. Because his body was afflicted by the sun and hunger and thirst, his body became very thin and weak. When his father, the king, came to visit with his retinue, he fell into a pit of sorrow.

At that time, the Bodhisattva arose from that samadhi and spoke thus: "The sun, moon, and stars will not fall to the ground. Though I am an ordinary person, I will not die. Therefore, you should not grieve over this. Before long, I will attain enlightenment and become a Buddha." Thus he spoke. Then, when he went to the Vajra Throne (Bodh Gaya) to manifestly attain perfect enlightenment, the village girl Lekshkima offered the essence of milk from a thousand cows, extracted by milking and pouring it in one go, and finally mixed with honey. Auspicious signs such as the auspicious knot and swastika appeared. She offered this to the Bodhisattva, and as soon as he consumed it, his previously emaciated and weakened body vanished, and his body became like a polished golden statue. Then, the grass seller Tashi offered grass that was as green as the feathers of a peacock's neck. The Bodhisattva accepted it and, in the central region of the Vajra Throne (Bodh Gaya), at the special place where the thousand Buddhas of this fortunate aeon will attain enlightenment, together with the Bodhi tree. That tree, whose essence does not change but whose form changes, upon the throne beneath it: "Until I attain the unpolluted, I will not break this cross-legged posture." Thus he said. "On this seat, though my body may wither, though my bones, skin, and flesh may decay, until I attain the enlightenment that is difficult to find in countless aeons, this body will not move." Thus he said. Then, the day being divided into three parts and the night into three parts, during the first watch of the night, blue and other rays of light emanated from between his eyebrows, making the palaces of the demons dim. When the demons saw this, they wondered what it was. They knew that the time had come for the Bodhisattva to manifestly attain perfect enlightenment under the Bodhi tree. The demons then came to the Bodhisattva and said, "What are you doing here?" The Bodhisattva replied, "The time has come for me to manifestly attain perfect enlightenment." The demons said, "To manifestly attain perfect enlightenment, isn't it necessary to accumulate merit for three countless aeons?" The Bodhisattva said, "You became the lord of the desire realm with a single impermanent offering, while I, for countless aeons, have offered my head and limbs..."
