The earth element. First, even without attaining stability in samadhi through the five experiences of agitation, attainment, steadiness, stability, and perfection, one meditates with mere faith by making the general meaning of what is to be meditated upon an object of thought. Second, the samadhis of the various paths, etc., are taught to perfect the samadhi of whichever path is meditated upon through the five experiences. The five experiences are: Acharya Vimala said in the commentary on the Mudra Samadhi, "The five, agitation, attainment, steadiness, stability, and perfection, are the ways in which the experiences of samadhi arise." Among these, the first is: when one abides in samadhi, it is as if thoughts arise more than before, like the first waterfall on a steep cliff, which is the experience of agitation. This is because previously thoughts were not controlled, so they were allowed to overflow. Now, in this situation, one begins to try to abide, and at first one recognizes thoughts, so it seems as if more thoughts arise than before. This is also called the experience of recognizing thoughts. Second, without seeing it as a fault, one continues to meditate, and the arising and ceasing of thoughts is uninterrupted, but only for a moment does one abide in the midst of thoughts, like water in a narrow cave, which is the experience of attainment, also called the experience of resting thoughts. Third, from then on, continuing to meditate, sometimes thoughts only flash vaguely, but most of the time one abides in a state of no-thought, like the behavior of an old person who cannot do many movements, which is the experience of habituation, also called the experience of thoughts being exhausted. Fourth, from then on, through diligent meditation, most of the time one abides in a state of no-thought, clear and bright, and it seems as if one is only slightly shaken by strong conditions, like a small lake stirred by a breeze, which is the experience of stability, or also called the experience of being able to be moved by thoughts. Fifth, having become accustomed in this way, no condition can harm one, and one can again increase and gain control to the extent that one desires. Like a calm ocean without waves or a mountain that cannot be shaken, this is the experience of perfection, or also called the experience of attaining freedom. Furthermore, regarding the path of definite perfection, in the Lamrim it says, "Through the way of ripening in stages, the five limbs of entry are established."

Those who regard all things as self-awareness, death is the ultimate truth of the ultimate reality, while birth and the intermediate state are conventional truths. The three stages of birth are non-dual. This shows that birth, death, and the intermediate state are all complete as one. Death is the path that accords with clear light, which is great emptiness; similarly, the intermediate state is the path that accords with compassionate illusion; the three stages of birth are the paths that accord with one mudra, the mudra with elaboration, and the gathering of assemblies, which are the five paths with defilements. The coarse is purified by the generation stage, and the subtle is purified by the completion stage. In the first of the two, the phrase "death is clear light" indicates that the basis to be purified is the path that accords with clear light; the phrase "great emptiness" indicates the method of purification. That is, when sentient beings die, at the end of the completion of the internal and external dissolution processes, the clear light of the Dharmakaya of the death state appears. As it is said in the scriptures: "Appearance dissolves and thought dissolves, subtle dissolves and coarse dissolves, through habituation to dissolution, the appearance of clear light arises." As it is said, the coarse and subtle dissolution processes are explained from the perspective of increase. Moreover, before sentient beings die, the sign of the dissolution of the form aggregate of the Vairochana family into clear light is physical weakness. The natural radiance of mirror-like wisdom, the sign of coarse dissolution, is the diminishing of the clarity of mind. The sign of the dissolution of the earth element is that the body becomes emaciated and dry. The sign of the dissolution of the eye faculty is that the eyes do not change and become round. The sign of the dissolution of the object of form is that the radiance of the body disappears. The sign of the dissolution of the feeling aggregate of the Ratnasambhava family is that feelings are no longer experienced. The sign of the dissolution of the natural radiance of equanimity wisdom is that memory changes and one does not remember what was said. The sign of the dissolution of the water element is that the water in the mouth and nose, and semen and blood, etc., become dry. The sign of the dissolution of the ear faculty is that one does not hear sounds. The sign of the dissolution of the object of sound is that one does not hear the sounds coming from one's own body. The sign of the dissolution of the discrimination aggregate of the Padma family is that one does not remember sentient beings. The sign of the dissolution of the natural radiance of discriminating wisdom is that one does not remember the names of parents, siblings, etc. The sign of the dissolution of the fire element is that food does not digest. The sign of the dissolution of the ear faculty is that the upward-moving wind slows down. The sign of the dissolution of the object of smell is that one does not smell the odor of one's own body. The sign of the dissolution of the compositional aggregate of the Karma family is that the body's activities cannot be performed. The sign of the dissolution of the natural radiance of accomplishing wisdom is that the worldly
