Because of seeing it that way. Because the eyes are without defect, seeing the color of the conch shell as white is precisely the reality of the conch shell's color. Thus, the nature of the inseparability of subject and object, free from mind, is established. As it says in "The Ocean": This self-arisen, self-manifesting mind, Inseparable, self-aware, unborn, Clearly manifest, without doubt, Is taught as the supreme of all realizations. And as it says in "Garland of Views": All phenomena abide from the beginning in the state of enlightenment, which is not contradictory to scripture and oral instructions, nor does it rely solely on the words of scripture and oral instructions, but is directly realized through one's own awareness, with deep conviction in the depths of the mind. Thus, with these four reasons, all phenomena are established, and as the reality is clearly perfected, one gains mastery over the play of the single body and wisdom. Because it is said, "With the four supreme realizations," and so forth. Fourth, the reason of the three purities is: In this way, the five external elements of the outer world and the five aggregates of sentient beings within, all of which are gathered by the eight consciousnesses of their respective continuums, are from the beginning enlightened in the mandala of body and wisdom, that is, the five elements are the five mothers, the five aggregates are the five fathers, and the eight consciousnesses are purified into the five wisdoms. This means that the containers, contents, and continuums are all realized as pure. Whatever is pure in its nature from the beginning, and has never been stained by obscurations, is universally enlightened in the mandala of body and wisdom, like the Dharmakaya. Third, the reason of the four equalities is: All phenomena are enlightened from the beginning, because the four equalities realize samsara and nirvana as inseparable. The four equalities are: appearance that can function, like a person appearing as a person, is the true relative truth; appearance that cannot function, like a scarecrow appearing as a person, is the false relative truth; both of these are merely appearances, therefore they are equal in illusion; cutting off only a portion of elaboration is the definitive truth with distinctions; cutting off all elaboration is the definitive truth without distinctions, which is the common way. In particular, in the unsurpassed tantra, two superior equalities are taught, and by distinguishing between negation by exclusion and negation by implication, both emptiness with and without distinctions are the supreme definitive treasure.
