Therefore, all sentient beings constantly possess the Sugata-garbha. It is shown that all sentient beings possess the Sugata-garbha for three reasons. That which dwells within the husk of afflictions should be understood through examples. As it is said, the nine examples are: From that very text: Buddha, lotus, bee, honey, the essence in chaff, gold in impurity, treasure and sprouts etc. in the ground, small fruits, the Victorious One's body in tattered clothes, the lord of men in the womb of a wicked woman, just as there is a precious form in the earth, likewise, this element dwells in sentient beings obscured by the stain of sudden afflictions. Thus, it is explained as a brief presentation through nine examples. In the context of detailed explanation, it is established through ten categories, namely: From that very text: Essence, cause, effect, action, possession, entering, and state, likewise, the meaning of universally going, unchanging qualities inseparable, is said to be the intention of the ultimate realm. Thus, and so on, it is extensively explained. In short, to summarize, that which is called the Sugata-garbha is because the nature of mind, the indivisible truth, abides; in terms of being the essence of the Buddha, it is the Sugata-garbha; because the nature of mind has the qualities of the Dharmakaya in terms of emptiness, and the qualities of the Rupakaya in terms of appearance, it can arise without ceasing, hence it is the natural abiding lineage; because it is the source of both samsara and nirvana, it is the alaya-jnana; because it is associated with defilements in the state of sentient beings, it is the Thusness with defilements; and so on, in terms of the Kriya tantra, it is the self's Suchness; in terms of the Upa and Yoga tantras, it is the blessing of non-duality in the ultimate sense, and in the relative sense, it is viewed as the deity of the Vajradhatu; in terms of the Maha Yoga tantra, it is the great Dharmakaya, the nature of mind, primordially pure and indivisible; in terms of the Anu Yoga tantra, it is the mandala of the root bodhicitta, the non-dual son; in terms of the Ati Yoga tantra, it is the three: essence, nature, and compassion, and so on, it is said to be the basis for applying many names. If it is established generally without relating to any of the aspects of the three: ground, path, and result, as it is said, in this regard, there is no name other than nature or reality.

is the entry. If it corresponds to any of these three, then, for the state of not abandoning even a little impurity, it is established as the ground; for the state of purifying impurities, it is regarded as the path; for the state of being free from all impurities, it is established as the fruit. The definition is: Among the three stages, it is said in the 'Stages Three': 'All phenomena of two terms, are called ground because they arise without remainder.' It means that, in terms of the way of abiding, although it transcends the terms of samsara and nirvana, in terms of the way of appearance, these two terms arise. If the ground is divided, it is said in the 'Stages Three': 'The ground of essence and the ground of imputation.' It means that, in terms of the ground of the essence of the way of abiding, it is the ground of purifying impurities, like a precious jewel, which is the ground of essence. For example, like a jewel in the middle of mud. As Nagarjuna said: 'Water abiding in the earth, is immaculate and very pure. Wisdom in the midst of afflictions, likewise abides without impurity.' Like the mud of a jewel, it is the ground of imputation. All the phenomena of samsara that appear as non-existent are the impurities to be purified, like mud. This is grasping at duality in non-duality, which is a wrong view and delusion. The sutra says: 'Those who wrongly discriminate, see non-existence, these children practice non-existent dharmas.' And in the 'Manjushri Oral Instructions' it says: 'The phenomena of samsara are like a variegated rope, one should know that they are non-existent like a snake.' This is what is called the imputed ground. Grasping at appearance itself is the cause of accomplishing samsara, and it is the object of the consciousness of samsara, it is merely continuous, so it is explained in this way. It is not the cause continuum that becomes the proximate cause of the fruit, which means that it does not become the proximate cause of the fruit, because it is exhausted when the fruit is obtained, and it is an artificial and temporary dharma. The emptiness that is refuted by reason is also not the nature of the cause continuum. Although it is said that it is not the nature, it is also admitted that it is merely imputed, it is merely that merits and faults arise in relation to it. So what is this emptiness that is refuted? The pillar is empty of the nature of the pillar, the pot is empty of the nature of the pot, that is, all dharmas are empty of their respective natures, because the subject of negation, the dharma-possessor, is emptiness, so it is merely exhausted as unborn. These explain the meaning of the ground.
