The body mudra, the speech activity mudra, and the mind is the samaya mudra. Thus it is said. If the four mudras are explained in conjunction with the completion stage, then the upper gate, Tummo Caṇḍālī, is the samaya mudra; the three lower gate mudras are the karma mudra; the illusory body, great compassion, is the dharma mudra; and non-conceptual self-nature, clear light wisdom, is the mahamudra. Fourth, regarding the necessary connections of the tantra, there are also three aspects: the essence. In the Heart Drop, it says, "The connection of speech, necessity, and also necessity, transforms into four branches of cause and condition." Therefore, there are four: the expressed, the expresser, the necessity, and the ultimate necessity. The first is: the signified, the self-nature, the ground tantra, which from the beginning dwells naturally in the continuum of all sentient beings, is what is to be expressed. As it says in the Khok Zhung, "The signified, the self-nature, the ground tantra." The second is: in order to understand that self-nature tantra, the signifying path, the causal letter tantra, the magical net appearing as sound and being heard as sound, the support of designation, including the scriptures, is what is to be expressed. As it says in that very text, "That which is taught without exaggeration or depreciation is the signifying magical net." The third is: relying on hearing and contemplating the expresser, understanding the meaning of the expressed as the general meaning of the object of focus is the necessity. As it says in that very text, "Like a finger pointing at the moon." The fourth is: having understood in that way, practicing the meaning through either the generation stage or the completion stage, obtaining common siddhis such as reanimation and longevity is the subtle ultimate necessity; and the union of learning, the four vidyadharas, and the union of no more learning, the complete Buddha, thus manifesting the supreme siddhi, is the supreme ultimate necessity. As it says in that very text, "The necessity of necessity is the fruit itself." The explanation of these connections is: the expressed and the expresser are the knowable and the knower; the expresser and the necessity are the means and what arises from the means; the necessity and the ultimate necessity are what arises from that; and the ultimate necessity and the expressed are the connection of being of one essence. The definition is: why is it called the necessary connection of the tantra? Because the four dharmas, such as necessity, are interconnected as explained earlier.
