And four placements. The definition is: Derived from the sound of "Mandala," "Manda" (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) is essence or marrow, and "la" (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) is holding or taking. Because it holds the basis of the qualities of essence, it is called taking the essence. Also, without separating "Manda" and "la" of "Mandala," because the sound image means round or surrounding, therefore, whatever is the main thing is surrounded by the retinue, hence it is a mandala. Classification: The Buddha, in a secret way, for the sake of the Dharma, classifies them into three types: self-nature, samadhi, and image mandalas. Or, as stated in the "Later Tantra": "From the classification of body, speech, and mind, it is considered that there are three types of mandalas." And as stated in the "Small Commentary": "There are twelve types of mandalas: Suchness, self-nature, compassionate taming mandala, samadhi and image, superior samadhi image, Bodhicitta and superior Bodhicitta, accumulation and spontaneously accomplished mandala." Etc., there are twelve types of classifications, etc. Here, from the extensive point of view, as it is said: "This is the self-nature mandala, image, superior image three, samadhi, superior samadhi, Bodhicitta and supreme accumulation are taught." It is explained by dividing it into seven types. First, the self-nature mandala has two types: the self-nature mandala and the self-nature fruit ultimate mandala. The first is: the mandala of the reality that all dharmas are originally and naturally pure. As stated in the "Root Tantra": "The nature of Dharma, self-nature, is free from elaboration, all things are thus, it is the self-nature mandala." The second is: one's own wisdom becomes manifest, and one dwells in the Akanishta Dharmadhatu in the mandala where body and wisdom are inseparable. As it says: "The ultimate fruit is in Akanishta, dwelling in the form of mandala and retinue." Second, the image mandala is: the image of the ultimate truth naturally arises as the mandala of the conventional deity. As stated in the "Extensive Commentary": "The true meaning of the image mandala is, the great and coarse are understood as means, the individual characteristics are understood as wisdom, the non-dual connection is the great means." Third, the superior image mandala is: Vajra

From the activity sequence, the merits of entering and engaging in the level ground and measurement, colors and painting and forms, consecration, fire offering, and mandala. Thus, among the ten meanings, the first, level ground, is as follows: That very text states: "The base and its own characteristic, the power of taking, and purification, blessing, protection, and holding, are said to be the essence of the first." Thus it is said. The second, measurement, is as follows: In the root tantra, "The mandala should be measured as one cubit. Or it should be measured as one body length. Or the body is the measurement of three." Thus it says. "Or the cubit should be sixteen, twenty, or twenty-five." Thus, after specifically explaining the measurement of the image mandala, incidentally, the measurement of the remaining ting is: "Or it is a distance of one yojana. The expanse of the sky is immeasurable. Meditate on various Buddha mandalas." Thus it is said. The third, line, is as follows: This very text states, "The line should be drawn with intelligence." Thus it says. "Pegs, string, color powder, clothes, ornaments, beautiful and pleasing friends, the ritual of drawing lines is perfectly complete. The great wise one should do it diligently." Thus it is said. The fourth, color, is as follows: This very text states, "Meditate on the five family mandalas." Thus it says. "For the sake of showing those who are unseen and ignorant, or twenty-five colors, draw with five colors. Be pleased according to the ritual of taming." Thus it is said. The fifth, painting, is as follows: As it says, "It has a center and spokes, four spokes with a wheel rim, four corners and a square, a corridor in between with a door frame." Thus, paint according to the ritual of taming with any of the three mandalas, large, medium, or small. The sixth, arranging the forms, is as follows: Arrange the forms that possess body, speech, and mind. Thus it says, or combine the arrangement of the main deity and retinue. The Fierce Lightning states, "The main one should be fully painted as an image. The retinues should all be made into hand gestures. The ordinary ones should be represented by letters." Thus it is said. The seventh, consecration, is as follows: Generally speaking of the activity sequence of the Western Second, and the consecration of the mandala, which is the activity sequence appropriate to the occasion. The first is the consecration of the limbs, the activity vase, vajra bell, skull cup water, line and color consecration, etc., and those with limbs are shown by the vase, disciple, and three divine garments. The second is done through the nine kinds of activity sequences, etc. This very text states, "Artificial cloths are various." Thus and so on, body, speech, mind, and all dharmas.
