Because the substance of what is to be abandoned is not established, because it is the path of skillful means, and because it is of great nature. First, all dharmas are empty of their own nature, so there is no need to abandon them, just as there is no need to build a dam against a mirage. As it is said in the Vajra: "The afflictions are like illusions, empty of nature." And in the Sutra of the Wheel of Non-Regression: "Ignorance is like the sky, all dharmas are without characteristics. There is no desire and no hatred, pride and all jealousy, like illusions, their nature is non-existent, neither existent nor non-existent, without support." Second, if taken by means, even if afflictions are practiced, they will not bind but will become the path of liberation, so they are not abandoned, just as poison medicine destroys poison disease. As it is said in the Ocean: "The path of afflictions is great purity, the enjoyment of means is the best of ornaments, by enjoying everything, one quickly becomes the glory of Heruka." And in the Compendium of Vehicles: "For those who possess great means, afflictions become limbs of enlightenment." Third, the five afflictions are the five wisdoms, and they are the nature of the five families of the Victorious Ones, so they are not abandoned, because body and wisdom are not accomplished from substances other than afflictions, like what is made and impermanence. As it is said in the Twenty-Eight Root Vows: "The five afflictions, such as jealousy, are originally the nature of the five families." Again, what is the necessity of not abandoning? The five poisons of afflictions are not to be abandoned, because they possess three necessities. That is, there is the necessity of reversing the adherence to reality, just as once a householder named Meniapa thought that fire only burns, but later, seeing the behavior of the ascetic who practices fire purification and the animal fire weasel, he reversed the adherence that fire has only one aspect of heat, just as lower vehicles hold that the five poisons are only the cause of samsara, in order to reverse this adherence. Second, there is the necessity of giving rise to respect for the profound teachings, because lower vehicles see afflictions as faults and practice abandonment, prevention, purification, and transformation, but here, liberation is attained by using afflictions, thinking it is wonderful, so faith and respect arise for the profound teachings. Third, the mind that realizes the profound nature of reality quickly arises.

Because one realizes that afflictions are inseparable from dharmata, one is convinced that there is no need to seek the path and its fruit elsewhere. In short, both abandoning with antidotes and indulging in self-will are not free from faults. If one abandons afflictions such as hatred with antidotes such as loving-kindness, one will fall into the causal vehicle, and there is also the fault of not being able to eradicate them from the root. If one indulges in self-will without being grasped by skillful means, one will fall into the five tantras. As the Path to Enlightenment says: "Therefore, without realizing equality, indulging in the five poisons will cycle through the five tantras." Therefore, a yogi who possesses the confidence of view and meditation, even if he uses afflictions, will not be bound, like a peacock that lives on poison. When afflictions arise intensely, he will not be dominated by them like an ordinary person, nor will he perform abandonment, restraint, purification, and transformation like practitioners of the lower vehicles, but will transform them into the path like a fish at ease in water. This is the reasonable reason for not abandoning. Secondly: "White bodhi, red bodhi, excrement and great flesh, do not discard the pure vessel of water." Therefore, the five samaya substances are special substances that are composed of dharmata nature, one's own essence, power, and blessings, so they should not be discarded. There are four reasons for not discarding them: They are originally the play of dharmata without acceptance or rejection, so they should not be discarded. As the Limb says: "Nectar is the dharma of original purity, without acceptance or rejection, it transcends all. In the great samaya of original protection, the wise should accept it." The five families are the essence of the five wisdoms, so they should not be discarded. As the Ashes say: "Nectar, bodhicitta, vajra family, mirror-like wisdom. Similarly, great excrement is the dharmadhatu of the Tathagata, meat is the equality of the jewel, red rakta is the discriminating awareness of the lotus, urine is the accomplishment of the karma family. The five are the actual substances of the five families, great excrement, urine, bodhicitta." One should not abandon them in order to eliminate the five diseases, because white bodhi, red bodhi, large and small excrement, and great flesh can respectively eliminate hot and cold poison diseases, epidemics, and leprosy. One should not abandon them because they have five natural powers, in the previous order, one can obtain the qualities of unfailing memory 1, radiant clarity 2, longevity 3, melodious voice 4, and great power 5.
