Now, to explain a little, the vows of a Bodhisattva are: to restrain one's own mind-stream with the discipline of restraining misdeeds; to accomplish realization and special qualities by accumulating virtuous deeds that counteract misdeeds, which is the accumulation of virtue and Dharma; and to benefit others through direct and indirect means by working for the benefit of sentient beings, which are summarized into these three. Here, although it seems like engaging in actions and afflictions, because there is no attachment, nothing is actually done in the ultimate nature, which is the discipline of the vows. No matter how one acts, sealing it with the three doors of body, speech, and mind, and the three vajras, without transgressing, is the accumulation of virtue and Dharma. If it turns into benefiting others, then engaging without abandoning any Dharma of samsara is working for the benefit of sentient beings. It encompasses all the Pratimoksha vows and is completely pure. Third, to determine the classification, nature, and essence, there are the sudden vows that do not need to be protected, and the gradual vows that have boundaries to protect. The first is: abiding in the great equality vow, because there is no acceptance or rejection, there is no need to protect. As it says in this very text: "By joining equality with equality, abiding in the vow of equality, one will attain great perfection of equality." The second is: briefly explaining the vows of the general system of tantras, and explaining in detail the vows spoken of in this very text. The first is: from the root tantra of the Peaceful Gathering of Bliss: "Listen, assembly of the gathered ones! Whoever enters this mandala must protect and restrain, and uphold it with the classification of common, special, and more special." Therefore, there are three vows: common, special, and more special. The first is: all the vows that are commonly known as the boundaries of protection for the Pratimoksha, Bodhisattva, and outer tantras. As it says in that: "The Pratimoksha and Bodhicitta, the Action, Performance, and Yoga Tantras, whatever is said to be protected, are the common vows." The second is: it says in that: "The root is four, and the branches are twenty-five." Therefore, the root is the three of body, speech, and mind, or adding Bodhisattva as four. The five sets of branch vows, as it says in the Clear Light: "The five to be practiced and the five not to be abandoned, the five to be accepted and the four to be accomplished, and the five to be known, are the uncommon teachings." The third is: the yogi who abides in the common and special vows, engaging in great practice.
