Some say there is no fault. If so, does the wisdom of thought arise after the clinging appearance is purified, or does it arise when it is not purified? If it is the former, then at that time the clinging appearance does not remain, and the wisdom of thought becomes meaningless, which is too much. If it is the latter, then at that time the stream of consciousness is the same as what is measured and what measures in an instant, and the stream of consciousness becomes dual, which is too much. If you ask this question, there are two answers: a direct answer and a supplementary explanation. First, it is not like that, because as soon as the power of the latter antidote comes into contact, the former object to be abandoned tends to cease to manifest, because this is a contradiction that cannot exist together for a long time, so there is no fault. Second, when darkness is dispelled by mere appearance, does appearance arise after the darkness is purified, or does it arise when it is not purified? If it is the former, then at that time the darkness does not remain, and the arising of appearance becomes meaningless, which is too much. If it is the latter, then at that time appearance and darkness are the same, and on one manifest object, the two aspects of obscuration and non-obscuration exist at the same time, which is too much. In short, it is not measuring the self-characteristics of samsara and nirvana, but the clinging mind that clings to samsara as the outer and inner container and essence, and clings to nirvana as the dharmakaya and wisdom, that is what is measured. As it is said in the 'Compendium Sutra': 'What must be established as the measurable is that the self-nature of samsara and sorrowful nirvana is not recognized, so the inner clinging makes the outer non-existent appear to exist, relying on other clinging and appearance.' That is to say, neither clinging nor appearance alone is measurable, but the collection of appearance and clinging that appears as nirvana but clings to samsara is. Therefore, mere appearance and clinging are regarded as phenomena. Some say: Appearance and clinging as phenomena do not need to be measured by reason, because this has already been established. This statement is not pervasive, because although appearance and clinging are established, they are not necessarily the nature of phenomena, so they need to be measured. Even so, establishing appearance and clinging does not establish the nature of phenomena, because they are different. Just as the eye establishes form but cannot establish sound. If you ask this question, things that are as different and unrelated as form and sound are not established, because appearance and clinging and the nature of phenomena are the relationship between phenomena and the nature of phenomena. Establishing appearance and clinging will establish the nature of phenomena, just as examining the illusion of a snake will reveal that it is a rope.

Secondly, if it is said that because clinging appearances are inconceivable, they will become immeasurable? No, it is not necessary to measure each of those individually, because by establishing one clinging appearance as the nature of reality, all will be established, because all clinging appearances are of the same kind. For example, if one reed is hollow, then all are hollow. As it is said in the Mother Sutra: 'If you know the suchness of form, you will know the essence and elaboration of all phenomena.' And as it is said in the Stages of the Path: 'Dualistic grasping, dualistic objects, the dharmas of the three times, are all perfected in a single instant. By seeing that reality, one knows all things correctly, just as they are.' Fourthly, refuting objections: Well, is the discriminating wisdom of individual discernment a delusion or not? The answer is: the wisdom of individual discernment, the subject, is not a delusion, because if it were, the meaning would not be established, and the arising of discriminating wisdom would become meaningless. Therefore, here we assert that it is non-delusional wisdom. To this, someone says: Because it is non-delusional, it follows that liberation will be attained effortlessly. If it is non-delusional but does not lead to liberation, what is the point? It is like the direct perception of the senses. Furthermore, the discriminating wisdom of the measurer, having made clinging appearances its object, the subject, it follows that it is a delusion, because it takes the fabricated falsehood itself as its object, like perceiving a yellow conch shell. This needs to be examined. Are you saying that it takes the Svatantrika school as its object? Or are you saying that it takes the basis for establishing selflessness as its object? In the first case, the reason is not accepted. According to the second case, the pervasion is not established, because the object of measurement itself, due to the cause of individual discriminating consciousness, transforms into a non-apprehending wisdom in the second moment, because it is a cause and effect. As it is said in the 'Vimala Wisdom Unveiling': 'Although the nature of the two temporarily intervenes, because it is a cause and effect, it is also the same for the other.' Secondly, the means of measurement, the reason, includes the meaning and the establishment. The first is: in order to make the meaning to be established understood, the method is placed on the basis of debate, having the function of performing both refutation and establishment. As it is said in the Stages of the Path: 'Therefore, the reason is called a function.' And, 'Reasons, statements of reasons, etc., for the purpose of understanding what is to be established, whether you derive it from the definition, essence, characteristics, etc., elaborate on it extensively.'
