Whatever is the subject to be measured, the reason for measuring it, and the tenets of measuring it in that way. Firstly, the object to be measured, which is the object of what kind of wisdom, and incidentally, dispelling doubts and refuting disputes. Firstly, depending on the occasion and purpose, there are three ways to establish the subject of debate. That is, when two opponents are arguing, one that appears to be in agreement, such as a vase, is established as the subject of debate. By placing it there, there is a need to establish it with valid cognition. As it says in the Two Truths: "In the minds of the two opponents, whatever part appears as manifest, then relying on that part, inference will arise at that time." So it is said. When a lama bestows instructions on a student, the eight classes of gods and demons, together with their places, are established as the subject of debate. By placing it there, there is a need for the instructions to be bestowed to fall upon the student's mindstream. Also, when he explains the scriptures to him, all phenomena included in the two entities are established as the subject of debate. By placing it there, there is a need to determine the nature of those phenomena. Of these three, here it is the latter. As it says, "All the deluded phenomena of the world." And so on. Also, as it says in the Lamrim: "Also, what should be thoroughly examined is all that appears as sense objects to the senses. The objects are not existent, but are the appearances of the basis of all. Because various things appear, examine the appearances of attachment to samsara and nirvana." And also, in the Lamrim Namkod of Indrabhuti, it says: "Measure the objects of examination with two." So it is said. Secondly, in general, although it is the object of the alaya consciousness, it is especially present in the objects of the six aggregates. As it says in the Vimala's Lamp of Characteristics: "In general, it is the object of the root consciousness, but especially the appearances of the objects of the six aggregates." So it is said. Thus, since the conceptual consciousness that makes the appearances of attachment the object of imputation, meets with the oral instructions of the lama, and transforms into the wisdom of the intermediate thought due to the cause of the first wisdom, it is the object of the wisdom of individual discrimination. As it says in the Lamrim: "The imputed consciousness transforms into the intermediate." And also, as it says in the Namkod: "The reason for individual discrimination is the cause for the object of the spoken object." So it is said. Thirdly, due to the doubts of not having anything to measure and not being able to measure enough. Firstly, the thought consciousness that transforms the mind-place, holding the two entities together.
