When worldly dharmas are taken as objects of measurement, are we measuring nirvana or samsara? If we take the first option, the self-nature of what has passed is the initial karma, because it is hidden from the discriminating wisdom of faith and practice. Since it is not the realm of our experience, it cannot be taken as an object of measurement. As the *Vibhaṅga* states: "Since the past is not an object of experience, how can it be a suitable object of measurement?" And: "If we measure the appearance of the past, then the initial will become hidden." If you say that we measure the mind that clings to it, that is also not reasonable, because nirvana is not the object of mistaken consciousness, so we cannot cling to it. If we cling to it, it will become a fabricated dharma of samsara, and thus not nirvana. As it is said: "If the mind clings to nirvana, that itself is not true nirvana." If we take the second option, are we measuring the mere appearance of the self-nature of samsara, or are we measuring the clinging, fabricated consciousness? The first option is not reasonable, because awareness is self-appearing. Since it appears like an established tenet, it cannot be taken as an object of measurement. As stated earlier: "The nature of appearance itself is the object of expression, because it is the appearance of awareness. It is not a suitable object of measurement for ordinary beings, appearing like an established tenet." Furthermore, Atiśa said: "How things appear is not itself to be negated, because it arises dependently. Here, what is to be reversed is the grasping at suffering as true." Therefore, mere appearance is not the object of negation on the path, because awareness cannot negate it, and if it is negated, there will be faults. Because it would obstruct the accumulation of merit on the path, and cut off the stream of the wisdom of knowing all things. If you say that we measure the clinging, fabricated consciousness, that is also not reasonable, because consciousness has the nature of three moments, so it cannot measure the objects of the past and future, because the past has ceased and the future has not yet arisen. As the *Vibhaṅga* states: "The moment of mistaken conceptual proliferation, the former has passed and the latter has arisen. Based on that, it is not reasonable to investigate." If you say that we measure the present, that is also not reasonable, because the mind of the present, which is conceptual, itself transforms into the wisdom of contemplation. At that time, clinging also transforms, so the object of measurement for investigation is not established. Because it is not established, it cannot be measured, because there is no object, like a shadow without a body. Furthermore, contemplative wisdom cannot measure itself.

It is not tenable, just as a finger cannot touch itself. As it is said, in the "Discrimination Chapter": "The present moment is unstable, residing and changing in each separate thought, it is not appropriate to examine oneself when attachment is cut off." Also, in the "Stages of the Path": "The conceptual mind changes in between, the external object is like a bodiless shadow, because it is non-existent, it cannot be in itself, it is doubtful like a finger." Therefore, what should be measured? The present moment of consciousness is measured by the appearance of attachment in itself. In the "Discrimination Chapter" it says: "That consciousness is momentary, that too is examined in itself." Thus, is there nothing to measure because the mind resides and changes in the wisdom of separate thoughts? Although the mind with conceptual thought temporarily resides and changes into thinking consciousness, because the nature of attachment is not purified, it can generate conceptualization, and because the appearance of attachment can arise, there is no fault in this. The antidote that purifies the mind with conceptual thought from its root is the wisdom of meditation, but it has not yet relied on one's own continuum, and the path of seeing, which completely eliminates conceptualization from its root, has not arisen here either. The "Stages of the Path" says: "Because there is no antidote, it is not pure, because it is an intermediate object, the definitive word can be established." Also, the "Discrimination Chapter" says: "If the mind changes, attachment also, ceases simultaneously with the moment, then the basis for examination should not exist. If you doubt that the objects of attachment are not permanently pure, although they act separately, you still see the objects of attachment." Thus, it is not to be measured by gathering together at the same time as manifestation on the stream of momentary consciousness, but when one manifests, the other remains dormant. It is measured by the way the former and the present, the present and the future meet. The first moment of the present is just a meeting, the second is the beginning, and when the third is the complete arising of thinking consciousness, the manifestations of the former conceptualizations cease accordingly, and in the next moment, when other conditions cause it to be forgotten, conceptualization is arising. Because the object and consciousness are not mixed, there is no fault of immeasurability. In the "Discrimination Chapter" it says: "Because the dwelling changes at the time of seeing, the doubt of immeasurability is also, attachment is the general object of knowledge, the momentary dwelling change is knowledge itself, therefore, because the object and mind are not mixed, the appearance of attach
