Because one wishes to eliminate the biased wrong views that regard what is to be refuted as either pure or impure compared to what is below, one uses the reasoning of purity; because one wishes to be free from both refutation and establishment, one measures with the reasoning of equality. Among these, the first is based on the certainty of the causal relationship to realize what is to be proven, while the latter three are realized based on the relationship of inseparable essence. Secondly, in the case of different meanings with the same sound, there are both meaning and determination. The first is that the words are commonly spoken in both Sutra and Tantra, and are determined according to this meaning. The second is divided into four: self and general characteristics, freedom from extremes, differentiation, and symbolic examples. The first is that those of the characteristic vehicle consider the general characteristic of afflictions to be the state of mind that is not completely pacified. The self-characteristic is: ignorance is the mind being completely foolish and dull, hatred is completely tormenting the mind, pride is completely arrogant, desire is completely attached and craving, and jealousy is unable to bear the excellence of others. They distinguish between self and general characteristics and regard them as the path of samsara, thereby abandoning and practicing them. Here, (the Nyingma school) considers the general characteristic of afflictions to be the wisdom of non-proliferation, and the self-characteristic to be the unobstructed appearance of wisdom like the magical skill. Because there is no other fruit to be proven other than realizing these, it is different meanings with the same sound. As it says in the commentary: "Afflictions, self and general characteristics, if one does not mistake their meaning, will turn into the path of purification." If one establishes it with reasoning, then the five poisons are the subject, not truly established, because their respective self-natures are empty. For example, a patterned rope appears as a snake, but in reality, it does not have the nature of a snake. Similarly, in the Arrangement it says: "Some self-awareness is a great method, uninterrupted appearance is the self-characteristic, the nature of all things being purified, is declared as the general characteristic." The second is that all phenomena, internal and external, are the subject, not clinging to the extremes of elaboration and the center related to it, because they are truly free from one and many. As it says in this very text: "Free from the extremes of one and many, without edge or middle is suchness, even the Buddhas do not see this state, self-born wisdom appears without a place." And as it says in the Stages of the Path: "Without edge or middle, free from multiplicity."

Thus, the Suchness that is nothing whatsoever. In order to realize the way of non-duality. Being free from extremes is also the same. Thus it is said. That also agrees in sound with the vehicle of cause, which establishes the complete cutting off and freedom from elaboration by means of various restrictions and prohibitions. However, here, since the appearance to be negated is not abandoned and there is no contact with clinging to extremes, the meaning is superior. As it is said in this very text: "The Middle Way of existence and non-existence is also not perceived, like the nature of illusion and optical illusion." And in the 'Distinguishing Establishments' it says: "In order to dispel the evil views of sectarianism, in order to place the desire for freedom from extremes here, although it is said to be free from extremes, all extremes are self-knowing and self-appearing. Here, there is no attachment to being free or not free, liberated or not liberated." Thus it is said. Thirdly, the pot, the subject of dharma, is not established by its own nature, because it possesses many dharmas such as shape and color, and because the appearances of external objects are not established as one. Like the collection of materials for an arrow. Thus it is also said in the 'Extensive Text': "For the five great elements, in order to destroy their lack of self-nature, one should divide each one into five, and dissolve them into the realm of མཱུཾ་ (Tibetan), मूṃ (Sanskrit Devanagari), Mūṃ (Sanskrit Romanization), the realm of nothingness. མཱུཾ་ (Tibetan), मूṃ (Sanskrit Devanagari), Mūṃ (Sanskrit Romanization), Nothingness itself is beyond speech and thought." Thus it is said. To this, the common ones, each of the five great elements is divided into five, and they are established as distinct, thereby destroying the gross appearance, so it agrees in sound. However, here, the signifying letter མཱུཾ་ (Tibetan), मूṃ (Sanskrit Devanagari), Mūṃ (Sanskrit Romanization), nothingness, causes the signified dharma to be absorbed into the single realm of dharma, so it is superior. In the 'Distinguishing Establishments' it says: "If the objects of appearance are completely destroyed, then the characteristics of each are without substance. If destroyed, they rest in the nature of space. If space itself is destroyed by the five, then it dissolves into the realm of no characteristics. In order to place faith here, and in order to see the ultimate truth of the great secret, all objects of expression are without distinction, and are not different by means of distinctions." Thus it is said. Fourthly, if one does not believe in establishing some dharmas as real, then one establishes them by means of examples. The nature of mind, the subject of dharma, is not established as anything, because it cannot be grasped, like space. Thus, in the 'Stages of the Path' it says: "Because space cannot be grasped, all appearances and existences are similar to it." Thus it is said. That also, the common ones, consider the example and the meaning to be different, but here, because everything is one in the nature of dharma, it is represented as non-dual, so it agrees in sound, but the meaning is superior. In the 'Distinguishing Establishments' it says: "Because appearance has no inherent existence."
