Furthermore, it says, 'First, abide in the foundational vehicle, then gradually progress.' Also, the 'Smaller Path' states, 'Some, from the common paths, must learn to enter here through causes and conditions.' This is the third case: entering here after the fruition of the lower vehicle is complete. The 'Smaller Path' states, 'When the common ground is perfected, with faith and aspiration for the blessings of the fifteen true embodiments of body, speech, and mind, it will surely transform into a mandala.' The second is that there are three types of causes and conditions that give rise to distinctions: cause, condition, and relation. The first has two aspects: The corresponding cause is that the nature of mind abides primordially as the essence of the Sugata. The 'Stages of the Path' state, 'The essence is of the same nature.' The cooperative cause is that hearing of the faults of the lower vehicle causes weariness, and hearing of the qualities of the higher vehicle causes joy, thus generating the desire and effort to enter here. As mentioned earlier, 'Hearing two teachings from the virtuous friend, seeing qualities and seeing faults, therefore, weariness and joy are said to be the second cause.' The second is, 'From there, those secret objects, etc., immediately increase moment by moment.' Of the four conditions, the disciple with the intelligence to understand the nature of reality and the wisdom to discriminate is the causal condition; the lama endowed with scripture and oral instructions is the dominant condition; the lineage of symbolic letters along with oral instructions is the objective condition; the wisdom gained through hearing and thinking, the previous moment opening the way for the subsequent realization, is the immediate condition. The third, relation, also has four aspects: The path with the cooperative cause, the corresponding cause—the self-aware meaning of the lama, like something made and impermanent—is related by nature. The empowering condition of the qualified lama, like a golden vessel and gold, or lion's milk, is related as container and contents. The objective condition—the dharma to be taught, Mahayoga, like fire and smoke—is related as knowable and knowing. The one who teaches it—the Sixth Dalai Lama, like the sun and the four continents—is related by action and compassion. As it says there, 'With the virtuous friends, there is a relation of nature; with the possessor, there is a relation of container and contents; with the great teachings, there is a relation; and with the protector, there is a relation of action and compassion.' Thus.

If generating Bodhicitta requires having six causes and conditions, then the Bodhicitta generated from the four types of paths will decline, because without a lama in one's own country, it is impossible to generate Bodhicitta? Although that is true, like a rhinoceros or a parrot, relying on a friend of the same kind to accomplish things, there is no fault. As it says here: For one's own country, it is like a rhinoceros. And in the Guhyagarbha Tantra, it says: For one's own country, it is the form of a friend, showing it and entering the Great Vehicle's object. And in the Sutra Requested by the King of Complete Transformation, it says: For those who are to be tamed by the form of a Pratyekabuddha, they abide in the form of a Pratyekabuddha and perfectly show the Dharma with the symbol of dependent origination. This is clearly stated. Third, the way of arising is: Nyang's commentary and Glen's commentary, etc., consider there to be eight types. Depending on different aspirations, they are divided into two: skillful means and liberation; depending on the size of the intellect, they are divided into two: gradual and sudden; depending on whether or not to abandon the stages, they are divided into two: direct transcendence and gradual progress; depending on whether or not attachment is purified, they are divided into two: contaminated and uncontaminated; depending on the size of the signs, they are divided into two: deity and non-conceptual meditation; depending on the harshness or gentleness of those to be tamed, they are divided into two: peaceful and wrathful; depending on self-power and other-power, they are divided into two: wisdom and instructions; depending on the clarity or unclearness of Samadhi, they are divided into two: the way of generating Bodhicitta through faith-based meditation and definitive completion meditation. Although it is thought that way, here, the root of the path is the two: skillful means and liberation. Both of these ways of arising depend on the faculties, and arise by entering gradually and suddenly. Therefore, it is explained as two: gradual and sudden. This is what the great secret lord Sro Phukpa and Je Drinangpa, etc., approve of, so it is explained in that way. There are two aspects: classification and proof. The first is: each of the naturally sharp faculties and the cultivated sharp faculties enters in two ways, gradually and suddenly, from the perspective of the size of the intellect. As it says in the Lamrim: Also, due to nature and cultivation, becoming a vessel, there is nearness and distance. By dividing with four parts, gradual and sudden, one enters the Great Yoga. Like this, there are four. Among them, the cultivated sharp faculties entering gradually is: from previous lives onwards.
