It is like the knowledge of grasping a rope as a snake arises because of existence. Similarly, it is said in the A-ro Thigle cycle: 'Without a basis for delusion, delusion will not arise; without truth, truth will not arise.' Here, the great Lama Sugata said: Although there is no delusion in the basis, delusion has a basis, just as a rope is mistaken for a snake. Moreover, delusion arises even without a basis for delusion, just as hairs appear to fall from the sky in the vision of someone with cataracts. As it is said in 'Clear Light': 'Like there is no darkness in the center of the sun.' And in the 'General Sutra': 'All phenomena of samsara and nirvana are merely appearances, and there is nothing at all.' Delusion also arises from non-duality, because the key point of non-duality of ignorance and wisdom on the basis of reality causes the realization or non-realization of it to appear as liberation or delusion. Just as camphor, medicine and poison are not different, it is medicine for those with fever and poison for those with wind disorders. Similarly, as it is said in the 'Heart Drop': 'Because the two truths are without difference of existence or non-existence, its cause and condition are its nature, like the benefit and harm of medicine, all without exception have one cause, dissimilar differences appear separately.' Second, if considered from the perspective of narrow language, the basis, naturally pure, free from the extremes of existence and non-existence, is deluded because it does not recognize itself. As it is said in the 'Heart Drop': 'The mind essence of all six realms of beings is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, how it is thought appears, the basis of delusion has no imputation of existence or non-existence.' Third, even so, is the so-called 'basis of delusion' referring to the Tathagatagarbha or to ignorance with its cause? If the former, the Buddha's intention will not be understood; if the latter, the nature of delusion will not be found. But there is no fault, because the cause of the lineage is the Tathagatagarbha, and the direct cause is ignorance. The details will be explained later. Second, the way of delusion. In 'Explanation of the Varieties of Illusion' it says: 'When cause, condition, and result arise, those who establish reason and fault, distinguish by approximation.' Therefore, there are eight meanings. First, there are two types of cause: general and specific. The first is: all phenomena of samsara arise from grasping at self, as it says in this very text:

The fault of delusion arises from clinging to self. (Tibetan) And, in the Later Tantra, it says: The afflictions of beginningless time, the self, are merely illusions because of clinging. (Tibetan) Secondly, in the Three Levels, it says: Lineage, coemergent, simultaneous, proximate. (Tibetan) Thus, there are four: The cause of lineage is the essence of the Sugata, the pure nature of the Dharmadhatu, originally without defilement. Although it is so, it becomes the cause of illusion because it is not recognized. That is, it is said here: Emaho! From the Sugata-garbha, it is transformed by the karma of one's own conceptualization. (Tibetan) The coemergent cause is the ignorance that arises simultaneously with the nature of reality. When it encounters conditions, it remains in a state where illusion can arise, like gold and gold rust. That is, in the Extensive Treatise, it says: Because the alaya is separated from the two aspects, clinging will not appear. Although the self-characteristic always appears, it is ignorance like the eye seeing the eye. (Tibetan) And, in the Small Text of the Cemetery Bliss Self-Abiding, it says: In the self-awareness of the Sugata-garbha, ignorance and the view of self are the coemergent cause. (Tibetan) And, in the Tinder, it says: Although the mind is naturally luminous, it is not determined by definite knowledge; this is coemergent ignorance. (Tibetan) The simultaneous cause is the imputed ignorance. From the false conceptualization that appears as object and subject, by the condition of the dual appearance of grasper and grasped, the habitual imprints of virtue and non-virtue are placed on the alaya, and together they create the high and low states of samsara. That is, it is said here: By the grasper and grasped of ignorant conceptualization. (Tibetan) And, clinging to the proliferation of grasper and grasped, the noose of conceptualization grasps separately. (Tibetan) And, in the Small Text, it says: From imputed ignorance and afflictions, the cause of simultaneous action is the cause of causes. (Tibetan) The proximate cause is that the habitual imprints of virtuous and non-virtuous actions become powerful, and the fruits of happiness and suffering have not yet been produced. That is, it is said here: Having thrown the coarse seed of existence. (Tibetan) And, in the Extensive Treatise, it says: By the dense habitual imprints of conceptualization. (Tibetan) Secondly, the conditions are, in the Three Levels, it says: Two conditions are shown: the three actions and the five poisons of imputed ignorance. (Tibetan) Therefore, there are the three actions and the five poisonous afflictions. The first is, in the Later Tantra, it says: Merit is benefiting others, and the opposite of that is sin. (Tibetan) Therefore,
