etc. What is it that is heard and taught? It is hearing and accepting by adding or subtracting from what is unchanging. Thus, it is not contradictory to establish certainty by determining separation from the realm of activity. Therefore, it is said in the root text: "The object to be signified is the continuum of the basis of self-nature. To teach without adding or subtracting is like the net of illusion, like pointing to the rabbit in the moon with a finger." Thus, it is also clear that the continuum of self-nature can be signified by the continuum of sound. What? If so, if you want to see the moon, pointing at it with your finger will surely allow you to see the self-nature of the moon. Therefore, from the beginning, it is not appropriate to use the example of seeing the self-nature to illustrate seeing the general meaning. If you say that, there is no fault. Even if you directly point to the moon for a child who is not familiar with symbols, it will become a general meaning. Just as later, in the water moon, the mind arises with the recognition of the moon. Although the object to be signified is explained by the profound sound of the signifier, ordinary people with minds of false discrimination cannot understand what is said as it is. Therefore, first establish the general meaning in the mind, and then gradually understand the profound meaning of the object to be expressed through the certainty guided by faith, which is undoubtedly established. Third, regarding the valid cognition that determines the basis, there are also three. Among them, the scripture is, in the Extensive One, it says: "Conventional truth, ultimate truth, and non-duality, and also the three natures, are clearly equal in those three natures." So it is said. The instruction is, in the Stages of the Path, it says: "That also establishes the three natures." So it is said. The reasoning is, the basis of the nature of reality or self-nature is the subject, and it is determined to be the three truths, because it appears as the two truths of distinct characteristics and negation, and the complete perfection of self-nature is inseparable, which cannot be denied even by the omniscient ones. As it is said in the Five Stages: "Conventional and ultimate truths, in their respective parts, having truly understood, wherever they are truly mixed, that is said to be union." And also in the Commentary on the Bodhicitta, it says: "Conventional is said to be emptiness, emptiness alone is conventional, like fabrication and impermanence, because without it, it cannot arise." Second, regarding the object of investigation, there are two: defining the characteristics and determining its meaning. First, there are three: negation, establishment, and abandonment. The first is negation. Most of the early scholars say that because it is investigated with the wisdom of the path, it is the object of investigation. If so, the path also becomes the object of investigation.

, just as mirages do not require dams, because fabricated additions through conceptualization do not establish the reality of what is to be abandoned. Then, practicing the path also becomes meaningless. Furthermore, the great Sugata Lama is, with the wisdom of individual self-awareness, the basis for investigation. It is said that, in that case, since it is the object of investigation by wisdom, all three—basis, path, and result—are included in it, which is unreasonable. The second is, the appearance of clinging to a mistaken understanding of reality, as stated in the Stages of the Path: "Examine the clinging appearances of samsara and nirvana." The third is, if it is said that even past phenomena become mistaken conceptions because they are the basis for examination, then this does not pervade self-characteristics, but is merely in accordance with the appearance of clinging. Why is that? Because the past is not the object of self-characteristic experience, and the mistaken self-characteristic of samsara is false. Since both self-characteristics are equally unsuitable for measurement, there is no fault in measuring by the appearance of clinging. Therefore, it is said: "There is no fault in measuring the appearance of clinging." Then, are the clinging appearances of samsara and nirvana measured separately? No, they are not. Although from the perspective of appearance it is a rope, from the perspective of clinging it is like clinging to a snake. Although from the perspective of appearance it is the past, from the perspective of clinging, the collection of clinging to samsara is what should be measured. The second is, in the Three Successive Stages, it is said: "The phenomena that show the two bases for examination are said to be samsara and nirvana." Therefore, it is the determination of the phenomena of samsara and the determination of the phenomena of nirvana. The first is, in the Heart Drop, it is said: "The basis of delusion, the manner of delusion, by its nature, gather together and fully understand." Therefore, the basis from which delusion arises, the manner in which delusion arises, and the nature of delusion, without deviating from the nature of reality, should be repeatedly contemplated. In the first aspect, there are also three: refutation, establishment, and abandonment. The first is, some say that Nyag Benjung and others are deluded because there is a basis for delusion from the beginning. This is unreasonable, because in the Heart Drop it is said: "Those who are dominated by additions, who have no object of mind itself, who say that the basis of self-nature is real, their lineage will always fall." Therefore, there are four faults. The first is, delusion is established as inherently permanent, because it is deluded from the basis of delusion that has always existed. If the reason is not established, then the vow is broken. If it is admitted, then it is clear from the Stages of the Path: "Because the nature of samsara is not found." The second fault is, the basis
