Does it arise from what is already produced, or from what is not yet produced? If you think it arises from what is already produced, then a clay pot, there would be no need to manufacture it, because it is already accomplished in the clay. If the sign is not established, then when the cause of the producer is established, the produced effect's establishment will disappear. If you think that even after it is already accomplished, it still arises, then it would follow that there would be endless arising, because a pot would also arise from a pot. Furthermore, if you think it arises from what is not yet produced, then because the cause is not established, it is not suitable as a producer, and because the effect is not established, it is also not suitable as what is produced. Second, if it arises from another, then from what does that other arise, from permanence or impermanence? If you think it arises from permanence, permanence is not suitable as the cause of a producer, because the cause does not change, it is impossible to produce an effect. If it produces, permanence will disappear. As it says in the Two Truths: "When things change into something else, the wise call it impermanence." If you think it arises from an impermanent other, then from which of the three times does it arise? The past has already experienced cause and effect, so it is not suitable for arising. The future has not yet arisen, so it is not suitable as a producer. If it arises from the present, then does the effect arise simultaneously with itself, or not simultaneously? If simultaneously, the producer and what is produced are not suitable. If not simultaneously, there is no meeting of cause and effect, so it is not reasonable to arise. Third, if you think it arises from both, that is also not reasonable, because if the two, cause and effect, are the same entity, or if two different entities are each other, then being one is contradictory. Furthermore, arising from self and other separately has been negated, so arising from both is also negated. Just as each grain of sand does not have the ability to produce butter, so the aggregate of piled-up sand also does not have that ability. Fourth, if you think it arises from no cause, then in no time or place has such arising been seen by valid cognition. Otherwise, it would follow that even a lotus could arise from the sky. Therefore, because arising from the four extremes has been negated, although it appears to be arising, there is no true establishment of arising. As it says in the Root Wisdom: "Not from self, not from other, not from both, not from no cause, therefore it is known that all phenomena have no arising and no cessation." Also, second, it is not established, if you say that time suddenly appears, then does that sudden thing arise from having a cause and condition, or does it arise even without a cause? If you think it arises from having a cause and condition, then is the cause and condition self or other?

The examination of arising from action is the same as before. It is impossible to arise without causes and conditions, because the cause of arising, namely self-nature, does not exist, so the ability to cause others to arise is also empty. Wherever a result is observed, it is pervaded by a prior cause, so sudden arising is impossible. As it says in the Pramāṇaviniścaya: Because there is no cause, it does not depend on conditions, therefore it should either always exist or never exist. Also, the third point is not established. If it is said that it is done by another agent, then is that agent done by a permanent agent or an impermanent agent? If it is done by a permanent agent, then that dharma, because it is permanent, has no ability to function. Whatever has no ability to function is not an agent, like a pot, like a rabbit's horn. If it is done by an impermanent agent, then because it is a momentary changing thing, the past and future do not exist, so it is not suitable as an agent. If it is the present, because what is produced is simultaneous with itself, there is no benefit in doing it, and if the time is different, because the doer and the done do not meet, it is not suitable as an agent. Again, someone says: It does not arise from causes and conditions, nor is it done by an agent, nor does it arise suddenly, but these things arise and exist, and no one can prevent it, so the fourth point is not established. A pot does not have a true nature, because it is separate from one and many. As it says in the Madhyamaka-aloka: These things of self and other, truly separate from one and many, therefore have no nature, like an image. If it is said that the reason is not established, then does the pot itself exist as one or as many? If it exists as one, then does it exist with parts or without parts? If it exists with parts, then it cannot be one, like a collection of stars, it will become many. If it is considered to be without parts, that is not established, because it has six directional parts, the gross appearance will disappear. As it says in the Twenty Verses: When six are joined together at once, the subtle dust will become six parts, if the six are all in one place, then the aggregate will also become subtle dust. Also, if there are many, do the many depend on one or not depend on one? If they do not depend, then the pervasive one is not established, so the pervaded many are also not established, like the position of numbers. If they depend, then it is one.
