There are two types of treatises: those that are printed and those that are composed by incorporating the meaning of the Buddha's words into one's own mindstream. These are, respectively, commentaries such as the "Spar Khab" and the "Kunchen Chenpo's Semnyid Ngalso" (Great Omniscient One's Mind at Rest). The fifth category consists of three types of treatises: those that explain the way things are, those that explain the extent of things, and those that explain the means of attaining liberation and omniscience. These are, respectively, the "Madhyamakalankara" (Ornament of the Middle Way), the "Abhidharmasamuccaya" (Compendium of Abhidharma), and the "Bodhicharyavatara" (Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life). The sixth category consists of two types of treatises: those that explain the meaning of the sutras and those that explain the meaning of the tantras. The first type includes treatises such as the "Abhidharmakosha" (Treasury of Knowledge) and the "Vinaya-vastu" (Root of the Vinaya), which explain the first turning of the wheel of Dharma; the "Madhyamaka-shastra" (Treatise on the Middle Way), which explains the second turning of the wheel of Dharma; and the "Uttaratantra" (Sublime Continuum) and Nagarjuna's collections of praises, which explain the third turning of the wheel of Dharma. The second type consists of treatises that explain the meaning of the six classes of outer and inner tantras, which can be understood elsewhere. The second division consists of two types of instructions: those that apply to the tantras in general and those that apply to specific stages of the tantras. The first type consists of instructions that rely on the wisdom of hearing and contemplation to directly ascertain the tantras. This includes both general explanations and commentaries. The first of these are the "Sgeg Pa's Thugs Thig" (Mind Drop of Sgeg Pa) and the "Vimalamitra's Khog Zhung Gsal Sgron" (Illuminating Lamp of the Fundamental Text of Vimalamitra). The second of these are the "Sgeg Pa's Rinpoche'i Spar Khab" (Precious Spar Khab of Sgeg Pa) on the root tantra, the "Nyi 'Od Sengge'i Rgya Cher 'Grel" (Extensive Commentary of Sunlight Lion), the "Sangye Sangwa'i Rnam Dbye 'Grel" (Commentary on the Differentiation of Buddha's Secret), the "Padma'i Rnam Bshad Chenmo" (Great Explanation of the Lotus), the "Vimala'i 'Grel Chung Pin Tartha" (Small Commentary of Vimala, Pindartha), and the "Chandra Gomi's Rgya Mdud 'Grel" (Commentary on the Knot Garland). For the explanatory tantras, there are the "Vimala's Lamai 'Grelpa Mun Sel" (Commentary on the Guru, Dispelling Darkness), the "Le Lag Gi Spyan 'Grel" (Eye Commentary on the Limbs), and the "Brgyad Cu Pa'i Bsdus 'Grel" (Condensed Commentary on the Eighty Chapters). The second type consists of instructions that primarily rely on the wisdom of meditation to train in and practice the realization of the tantras, which are the subtle cycles that show the upward aspect of all knowable objects. Among these, there are ten. The first is the instructions that primarily show the view, such as the "Garab Dorje's La Shan," the "Padma's View Garland," the "Vimalamitra's Wisdom Eye Opener and Lamp Cycles," the "Nagarjuna's Yu Thang," and the "Pal Tsek's View Sequence." The second is what mainly shows the conduct, such as the "Chod Drup Drönma" (Practice Summary Lamp) and the "Dorje Jamgön" (Vajra Manjushri). The third is the mandala, such as the upper part of the "Sangye Sangwa'i Dorje Le Trim Nyipa" (Buddha Secret Vajra Karma Sequence Two) and the "Mandala Dharma Meaning."
