They take birth in a world of clinging. As stated in the Root Verses on the Middle Way: When Buddhas have not appeared, And the Hearers have all passed away, The wisdom of the Solitary Buddhas, Arises spontaneously without reliance. Thus it is. Relying on that, they become naturally arising monks without a preceptor or teacher. When they go to the charnel ground, as soon as they see bones, they become disillusioned with samsara. When they investigate where these bones came from, they realize they came from old age and death, and that those came from birth, and so on. In this way, they gradually realize that the root of samsara is ignorance. Thinking about how to be liberated from this, they also realize that if ignorance ceases, then karma will cease, and so on up to old age and death. This is how they enter through realizing dependent origination in forward and reverse order. Second, regarding the view: Realizing the selflessness of persons is similar to that of the Hearers. On top of that, they realize that the apprehended aspect of the self of phenomena, the subtle particles, are without inherent existence, but they still regard the moment of the apprehending mind as ultimately true, and they consider samsara and nirvana to be dependent origination as cause and effect. Therefore, it is called realizing one and a half selflessnesses. As it says in the Ornament for Clear Realization: In order to abandon the thought of the object of apprehension, And because apprehension is not abandoned, The path like the horn of a rhinoceros, Should be known as a very concise summary. And in the Stages of the View, it says: Likewise, the Solitary Buddha Vehicle, The twelve outer realms are merely illusion, The subtle particles are also superior, not established by parts, Consciousness accords with each moment. And in the Stages of the Path, it also says: They do not understand the meaning of equality, In all actions and afflictions, And they completely grasp dependent origination as cause and effect, This is the ground of the Solitary Buddha. Thus, if someone says that it contradicts the statement in the Thirty Verses, "If there is no apprehended, there is no apprehender," there is no fault. Because the meaning of that scripture is that if someone with the characteristic of direct perception realizes that the apprehended is without inherent existence, then the apprehender must also be realized. But here, it is realizing that the general meaning of the apprehended that appears to the mind is without inherent existence. When one realizes such a thing, in order to reverse the ignorance that has become the root of the three poisons, it is asserted that one realizes that the apprehended is without inherent existence. Third, regarding ethics: It is the same as that of the Hearers. Also, in the Key to Distinguishing Illusions, it says: The boundary of protection for Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, Is the Vinaya discipline of two hundred and fifty. Thus it is. Fourth, regarding meditation: The Chapter on the Earth

From... It should be understood in the same way as the Shravakas, because they have the same nature of the path. Although it is considered that the path should be cultivated with emphasis on the Shravaka Vinaya, the superiors say that in the Sutra of Eliminating the Regret of Ajatashatru, there is a Pratyekabuddha Vinaya separate from the Shravaka Vinaya (the Sutra contains the letter "‹བ›"). Just as the root and commentary of the Ornament for Clear Realization also consider that there are differences in the path between Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas, on top of the sixteen aspects such as the Four Noble Truths and impermanence, by blocking the arising of dependent origination, the twelve emptinesses are cultivated in order. Fifth is conduct: without speaking the Dharma in words to those to be tamed, the meaning is expressed by means of bodily miraculous gestures. As the Ornament for Clear Realization says: "Whatever meaning to whomever, however they wish to hear, to each of those the meaning is that, even without sound it appears thus." And as Yuthang says: "Conduct is by means of bodily miracles, practicing some benefit for others." Sixth is the result: those with sharp faculties like a rhinoceros horn dwell alone, the five paths are completed on one seat, and they manifest the Arhat who knows the exhaustion and non-arising of afflictions, the supreme place of wish-fulfilling bliss. As the Treasury says: "The Buddha and the rhinoceros's enlightenment, all are at the edge of one meditation, their liberation shares are similar." Like parrots dwelling in flocks, the two types of community practice, large and small, manifest the four paths and three paths respectively in order. These are also mentioned in the extensive explanation: "Knowing the manner of inner and outer dependent origination as illusion and eye disease, entering unimpeded into the form of things, the virtuous friend realizes without learning by his own wisdom, going to the Bodhi ground, the supreme wish-fulfilling bliss." Second is the Bodhisattva Vehicle, explaining the manner of surpassing the Hinayana, and the particularly surpassing vehicle itself. The first point is: because of great wisdom, one is able to truly realize the two selflessnesses; because of great compassion, one is able to practice solely for the benefit of others, therefore surpassing. Because the Hinayana does not have these. As the Tantra of the Arrangement of Wisdom says: "With compassion focusing on sentient beings, with wisdom pervading the realm of Dharma, it is said to be the Mahayana, others are the opposite of that." Teacher Aro says: The difference of the vehicle is wisdom.
