Even if shown mixed together with trees, it is said that accomplishments will decline, So keep it secret at all times. The four intermediate secrets are: the place, time, companions, and substances of practice. Practice in secrecy in between. As it says, keep it secret during the practice. What should be kept secret are things like substances and behaviors that should not be seen or heard. What needs to be entrusted is: do not speak to others about the secret instructions given by the master and fellow practitioners. Like this, these five are: like the roots of trees, they are the foundation of qualities, so they are called the five roots. That is, bodhicitta and mantra mudras are the vows of practice, and the other three are the supreme of guarding vows, which are the roots. If further condensed into three roots, guarding the lama and fellow practitioners is the body vow, mantra mudras are the speech vow, and the ten secrets are the mind vow. Bodhicitta can also be condensed into the mind vow, which is convenient. Just as it is said in the Peaceful Tantra of the Bliss Gathering: Meditating on the three bodhicittas is the vajra mind vow. So it is said. Secondly, the branch vows have three: showing the five that are not to be abandoned, the five that are not to be discarded, and the conclusion of both. The first is: ignorance and so on, two roots. On this, the Clear Illumination says: The five genuine poisons and the five false poisons. So generally there are two kinds of inversions. The five genuine poisons are: when realizing all dharmas as equality, there is no partiality in view and no distinction of acceptance and rejection in behavior, this is ignorance; for those who have not realized it, attachment arises from great compassion without object; anger destroys wrong views with self-aware wisdom; pride does not accommodate the view of realizing equality; jealousy cannot accommodate the clinging to duality within the realm of equality. Through cultivation and habituation, they are practiced, so they are not abandoned. The five false poisons are: the five poisons themselves. Why should they not be abandoned? The five false poisons, having the nature of dharmas, are not to be abandoned, because all dharmas are empty in their own nature, so there is no substance to be abandoned; if seized by skillful means, even if used, they will not bind, but are the path of liberation; they are originally the nature of the five families. Therefore, it is necessary not to abandon them, because it can reverse the clinging to things, and this is how liberation is obtained by using the karma of binding.

Oh, it is amazing to generate definite understanding through the profound path of skillful means, and to realize the profound Dharma nature requires quick wisdom. Second, the five that are not abandoned: white pills, etc., two sentences, that is, white pills refer to white bodhicitta, red pills refer to red bodhicitta, and clean containers such as feces and meat, that is, essence, urine, etc. are to purify the discrimination of the pure veins, can eliminate five diseases, generate five common virtues, and are special samaya substances for accomplishing the five families and five wisdoms, so they should not be abandoned, but should be accepted. Here, most versions say "pure container essence" is impure, because the Chinese version has the corresponding word for water "Zalam". Tarlo's translation also says: "White and red, and feces and urine, clean meat utensils, water should not be abandoned." Third, the conclusion: limbs, etc., two sentences, if you do not abandon, it is because it becomes the fundamental companion or means, so it is called the ten-limb vow, because you understand the meaning of the three originally pure and the four combined, so you should practice it. Third, explain the meaning of the word: guarding, etc., one sentence, the five vows of guarding and accomplishing mentioned earlier are the fundamental vows, just like the roots of trees, guarding can obtain accomplishment, and if violated, even the seeds of Bodhi will be lost temporarily. The five vows of not abandoning are the companions of the fundamental vows, so they are called limb vows. If these are violated, they will hinder the rapid attainment of fruition, just like fences and moats that are difficult to cross. Third, the equal vows include faults and merits: equality and so on, one sentence, all dharmas are equal without discrimination in the three truths, and the profound path of wisdom integrates them equally, and not exceeding this meaning is the equal vow. Staying in this state, you can obtain the fruition, that is, the equal and complete Great Perfection Samantabhadra, the undifferentiated ground, so you should guard it. If you violate it, go beyond equality and cling to differences, you will not be able to obtain the fruition of becoming a Buddha. Fourth, there are three faults of violating the vows: the faults of violating the accompanying, fundamental violation, and limb violation. The first
