As for the meaning of the term "Tathāgata," generally speaking, from the Sanskrit word "Tathāgata," "Tathā" means "thusness," and "gata" means "gone" or "arrived" or "knowing" or "speaking." Just as the Buddhas of the past went by way of the practice of Bodhi, so they went and arrived in accordance with the path; they truly knew and spoke of suchness; they manifested the appearance of desirable qualities and went by practicing with their means; sentient beings are born in four ways, and in accordance with their thoughts, they go as if born from the womb, and so on, although there are various explanations. But here, the teacher Samantabhadra, there is a reason why you are called "Tathāgata," because you have matured by being free from the clinging that obscures the meaning of the Dharmata suchness, and because its nature has manifested, you are called "gone," as the Vajra says, "Also gone in suchness, it is said to be liberated from various clingings." And as the Later Tantra says, "Why is it gone in suchness? It is manifestly called Tathāgata." Therefore, teacher, you are called "perfectly complete" because you are the nature of spontaneous accomplishment without seeking qualities. You are self-born wisdom, because there is no abandonment to be mistaken, and you are truly complete because you are unchanging and not deceiving. Therefore, everything self-appears as the fruition of body and wisdom, because there is no remainder of abandonment and attainment, so it is called that way. This is different from the spontaneously accomplished Vidyadhara. Teacher, you are called "Buddha" because you are the nature of unobstructed wisdom, spreading without limit. Generally speaking, from the Sanskrit word "Buddha," it has both the meaning of "awakening" as if waking from sleep, and the meaning of "expanding" as if a lotus flower is opening. As other scriptures say, "Because of awakening from the sleep of ignorance, and also because of the expansion of wisdom towards the knowable." Here, although incompatible things and antidotes are not different, because of the power of manifesting the meaning as it is, it is called that way because it is the ultimate quality without abandonment and attainment. As the Limb Scripture says, "Ignorance itself is clear wisdom, afflictions and suffering are supreme Bodhi." Teacher, you are called "Bhagavan"...
