Some say that then the beginning of the Root Tantra of Peaceful Union of Hevajra should also say "At the time of this saying," which is reasonable, because that tantra proclaims that the teacher and retinue are of the same essence, because it says (in the scripture) "I am the great king, and I myself am the speaker and listener." If you say so, there is no fault. Although it is true that the teacher and retinue are indistinguishable, in this tantra it is spoken from the perspective of not making distinctions, while in other uncommon tantras such as Hevajra, it is only spoken from the perspective of making distinctions, because the inclinations of those to be tamed are known to be different. Therefore, the statement (that if "Thus have I heard" is not said, it is not the Buddha's word) has no universality, and this answer is valid. Furthermore, if it becomes non-Buddha-word because "Thus have I heard at one time" is not said, then the Root Tantra of Chakrasamvara and the Manjushri-namasamgiti, etc., should also be so, because they do not say so either, but say "Thereafter, the secret will be explained" and "Thereafter, the glorious Vajradhara." Therefore, the commentary on the Ornament for Clear Realization says, "This is just another establishment, so one should never rely on the views of other vehicles to make refutations." It is like explaining it this way. And the text of "At the time of this saying" appeared, and it has shown the meaning of the uncommon beginning. So, what is the second common beginning like? When explaining it, it is divided into two: the beginning of the difference of tantras and the common beginning of the arising of the doctrine. The first of these, explaining the beginning of the difference of tantras, as the subsequent tantra says, "The teacher and so on are well distinguished, and can be divided into five perfections." Or, as the Compendium says, "The teacher, place, retinue, and compilation, and the doctrine, should be understood through time." Therefore, it possesses six perfections, what are the six? Explaining the teacher by whom it was spoken, explaining the place where it was spoken, explaining the retinue to whom it was spoken, explaining what doctrine was spoken, explaining the time when it was spoken, explaining the compiler by whom it was compiled. The first of these, explaining the teacher by whom it was spoken, is further divided into the nature of the teacher and the individual who speaks. First, the nature of the teacher is that the sixth Buddha, the Bhagavan, is the common form.

That is, Samantabhadra. In the 'Emptiness Treatise,' it says, 'Possessing the eight natures of a teacher, one's self is Samantabhadra.' Therefore, this can also be divided into two: explaining the nature of the teacher and explaining the essence of the teacher. First, in explaining the nature of the teacher, there is this scripture: Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, Bhagavan, Great Enjoyment, the body, speech, and mind vajra nature of all the Tathagatas of the ten directions and four times, all without remainder, without omission, without anything left out, and the nature that is not separate, not different, and indivisible from each other. This scripture appears in this way. So, what is its meaning? The meaning of the teacher's nature and its determination are divided into two. First, the meaning: Teacher Samantabhadra, phenomenon. Your nature can be explained, because your intention, which is self-arisen wisdom, phenomenon. Existing without difference from all phenomena and the nature of phenomena that encompass samsara and nirvana, that is your nature. So, how is the teacher's nature determined? In 'Spar Khab,' it says, 'The infinite qualities of the six victors can also be summarized into seven.' Therefore, the teacher's nature is declared as seven. In the 'Emptiness Treatise,' it says, 'Possessing the eight natures of a teacher, one's self is Samantabhadra.' Therefore, separating 'Arhat' and 'Samyak-sambuddha,' it is declared as eight natures. In the small commentary of 'Vimala,' it says, 'The essence of supreme bodhi, enjoying phenomena as play, the lord of the Sugatas of directions and times, without difference from all phenomena.' Although the teacher's nature is declared as four, here, according to the instructions of the lineage of lamas, in short, there are two: declaring it inseparable from the transcendent phenomena, and declaring it inseparable from the phenomena of samsara. First, for the former, there is the separate display of the five names, and the general summary of the indivisible display. First, the separate display of the five names, which itself is what is to be explained, there is this scripture: Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, Bhagavan, Great Enjoyment. Regarding this, if we speak from the perspective of the greatness of the teacher's qualities, there are five names, namely, the self that has matured into suchness.
