Preliminary Instructions: Direct Instructions on the Five Paths of the Main Practice. Additionally, explanations of other necessary auxiliary methods. First, the general preliminaries sever attachment to samsara, and the special preliminaries establish the foundation for the path and facilitate accumulation and purification. The first part has four points: The instruction on contemplating the difficulty of obtaining leisure and endowments: From the suffering of terrifying samsara, now that we have obtained this precious human body endowed with the eighteen leisures and endowments, we must achieve liberation. The reason is that there is no other basis for practicing Dharma other than this one. This is extremely difficult to obtain, like the flower of the Udumbara. If obtained, it is of great significance, like a wish-fulfilling jewel. Therefore, at this time when we have obtained a pure human body as a basis for Dharma, just as we must cross a river when we have a boat. Now, we must strive to cultivate this stainless essence that teaches the cultivation of lifetimes. As Shantideva said, "This leisure and endowment is extremely difficult to obtain. Having obtained it, one can accomplish great benefit. If one does not practice virtue in this life, how can one obtain it again in the future?" As the Venerable One said, "Leisure and endowment, the human body is like a precious island. Do not let it be wasted, Dingriwa.". Second, contemplating death and impermanence: Although through previously accumulated virtuous karma, one may have temporarily obtained a perfect basis in this life, it is not permanent. Life is shorter than autumn mist, the body is as fragile as a water bubble, enjoyment is impermanent like an illusion, and relatives and friends are easier to separate than silk floss. As the sutra says, "Youth goes like water flowing down a mountain, moment by moment, in an instant, very quickly. Like thick autumn clouds without substance, and summer torrents that do not last long. Realize that enjoyment is impermanent and without essence.". Therefore, no one is spared from death, and we will surely die, and life is impermanent, and we do not know when we will die. At the time of death, nothing follows us, not food, wealth, enjoyment, dwelling, body, power, etc. Therefore, there is nothing truly necessary in this life. On the morning of death, nothing other than Dharma can help us. Like a snake entering the lap of a coward, or fire burning the hair of a beautiful woman, now immediately

Therefore, one must strive with great diligence to practice the sacred Dharma. The holy one said, "In the interval of negligence, the Lord of Death, the demon, will seize you. Practice now, Dingriwa." Third, contemplate cause and effect: Having died in this way, one will not completely disappear; both virtue and vice will certainly follow like body and shadow. There is no power to abandon the sins that have been committed. There is nothing to take away that one has not done oneself. If one falls into the lower realms because of non-virtuous actions, what will one do? There is no certainty of not being born there. Even if one is born in the higher realms, all the suffering there is produced by non-virtue. Therefore, from now on, even if it costs one's life, one will not commit evil. Do not despise small virtuous deeds. Do not be daunted by great virtuous deeds. One must train in virtuous deeds without interruption, like a wheel of fire, with body, speech, and mind. One must carefully adopt virtue and abandon vice, making such a firm resolution. The holy one said, "The ripening of karma, cause and effect, is certainly true. Dingriwa, avoid non-virtuous sins." Fourth, contemplate the faults of samsara: We beings, under the power of karma, wherever we are born in the high or low realms of samsara, there is never any opportunity for happiness, only suffering. Body, speech, and mind are tormented by the disease of desire, bound by the iron chains of self-grasping, and caught in the net of various sufferings. Wherever one is born in the six realms, there is no happiness. Hell has the suffering of heat and cold, the preta realm has the suffering of hunger and thirst, and the animal realm has the suffering of stupidity and being exploited. Even if one obtains the state of gods and humans in the happy realms, one does not escape the limits of suffering. Samsara is like a patient with constant, unbearable pain, or like a criminal imprisoned in a pit. Now, at this time when one has all the favorable conditions for practicing the Dharma, one must certainly attain liberation from this terrifying state of samsara. The venerable one said, "Thinking of the faults of samsara, the heart becomes agitated. Dingriwa, one cannot find joy in this." Thus, if one turns one's mind away from the pursuits of this life through these four contemplations, then a genuine path to liberation will arise in one's mind. The second part has five aspects: the foundation of the common vehicle—taking refuge, the foundation of the Great Vehicle—
