This instruction concerns the intention of the Buddha, the Dharmakaya Mahamudra Coemergent. The holy Sochungpa said, "With your eyes, stare directly at the sky, and look at the very awareness that sees. At that time, an experience will arise that is free from all concepts and without any essence of things. If that does not arise, then I have no essential instruction." And he said, "Staring directly at the coemergent awareness, from emptiness, the remainder will naturally arise."

Like a fish. What is upward is: Because the dwelling is narrow, like the hoop of a water bucket, being arrogant with lineage and qualities, and the shift of pride; thinking that this Dharma will not decline like that, and becoming discouraged and lazy. Second, the way to dispel these obstacles is: Although recognizing them sequentially can dispel everything, the special key is to restrain the way of looking at any object, relax the mind, and tighten the four upper and lower points, which will dispel the first three. What is upward is dispelled by restraining awareness without being distracted from it; and cutting off the root of lineage and qualities, observing who else is not there besides oneself, or especially observing what can be trusted. Thinking about the qualities of others, thereby abiding equally. For discouragement, pray to the lama and increase sharpness in awareness, which will dispel it. The first part of the second part, to bring out the effect: If there is no arising even after dispelling obstacles and practicing like this, then recognize and bring out the effect with the three: essence, nature, and characteristics. First, the essence is: The essence is self-knowing, clear, and stable. Examples of clarity are like a flower opening, like muddy water becoming clear, and like the rising of the sixteenth moon. An example of stability is like a turtle placed in a wooden bowl, because the practice of stillness is deep, so one does not know day or night. Like a bee stuck to beeswax, although the thread of conceptual thought is cut, it cannot clearly and brightly disperse. Like hitting ripe tsampa with a stone, even if the experience is turned over and placed, it will stay where it is placed. Examples of the nature being clear and powerful: Like a garuda flying in the sky without fear at the cliff of the six realms of beings; without fear of other vehicles, like a lion with complete power; awareness is not deceived by conditions, like a large flag being blown by the wind, such an experience will arise. Examples of the characteristics being empty, clear, and pure: Like the sky, pervading everything and without boundaries; like a great river, continuously arising in samatha and vipassana; like an image appearing on a mustard seed-sized glass, being able to use antidotes. In short, the essence is samatha, the nature is vipassana, and the characteristics are the realization of the union of samatha and vipassana. Also, superior faculties can simultaneously attain realization and liberation merely through recognition, intermediate faculties can make all appearances and conceptual thoughts appear as wisdom merely through recollection, and inferior faculties

Through the perspective of bodily posture, practicing in short sessions with numerous repetitions will transform an inferior faculty into a middling one, and a middling one into a superior one. The second part consists of two points: The first point, regarding the unchanging, definitive view, the commitment of the instruction is: When one is certain of the self-aware, immaculate Dharmakāya, even a learned and wise person cannot find a tenet superior to it through intellectual analysis. Therefore, by meditating in this way with faith and devotion, one realizes the meaning and gains certainty of conviction. The second point, regarding swift, direct, and undeviating practice, the commitment of the instruction is: Since all appearances and thoughts on the path of mindfulness manifest as wisdom during practice, practicing this itself swiftly attains the result in one lifetime. Because it is the singular path traversed by all Buddhas of the three times, it is without deviation. The third point, regarding relying and ultimately manifesting the result, the commitment is: When introduced to the self-aware, immaculate Dharmakāya, once faith arises and practice is completed, one need not seek Buddhahood from elsewhere, as it is oneself, and thus it will manifest. The fourth point, regarding maintaining equanimity when temporary setbacks occur, the commitment is: Whatever arises, maintain it in immaculacy. If the earth element is excessive, balance it with the wind element, and so on, which is the equanimity of the elements. Furthermore, in dwelling, enjoyment, conduct, food, friends, and all samādhi, abandon clinging and maintain equanimity. The fifth point, regarding maintaining temperature, like a skilled physician, the commitment is: Beginners should meditate in short sessions with numerous repetitions. Once accustomed, blend practice with daily activities. When matured, dwelling, friends, and conduct can all be unfixed. That is, like a crystal mirror that can see through all external and internal phenomena, whatever arises—external and internal secrets, illness, happiness, and suffering—practice it upon oneself. Thus, the self-aware immaculacy, like a flowing stream, purifies the stains of the two obscurations and habitual tendencies. The sixth point, regarding the culmination of experience and realization, like reaching the golden island, the commitment is: Just as one cannot find ordinary stones on the golden island, when the yogi's skill of experience and realization is developed, all appearances and thoughts are experienced as the unborn nature of reality. Even if one searches for conceptual thoughts, they cannot be found, and one will ultimately reach perfection in the nature of reality. The seventh point, regarding the arising of desired needs, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, the commitment is: For the yogi who practices in this way, whatever they desire—food, wealth, or anything else
