Even worldly people diligently cultivate crops, which are subject to doubt, so how much more should we strive for the pure Dharma, whose results are never deceiving? Therefore, whatever compounded phenomena we see, whether external or internal, we should take them as guides and aids for the appropriate moment. Seeing the multitude of humans and animals, we should recognize the difficulty of obtaining leisure and opportunity. Seeing the passage of time and the death of others, we should realize that we ourselves are also impermanent. If this happens, it is said that appearances dawn as the guru; otherwise, the guru is not merely the physical form. Second meditation: Add to the previous foundation, and do not abandon it. Settle the three doors (body, speech, and mind) in their natural state. As before, supplicate the guru, etc. Because leisure and opportunity are difficult to obtain, we must extract their essence. If we think that we can spend a few years preparing for the livelihood of this life and then practice Dharma, we should meditate on the instructions on the impermanence of death. Furthermore, the Dharma that keeps body and mind together is called life (སྲོག༵་). The exhaustion of that, which leads to the separation of body and mind, is called death (འཆི༵་བ༵). And since there is no certainty when death will come, it is impermanent (མི༵་རྟག༵་པ༵). From what does it turn the mind away? From clinging to permanence By what? By meditating on the impermanence of life How to meditate? (There are three certainties about death: the Lord of Death will surely come, and there is no way to prevent it; life is constantly decreasing, and there is no addition to it; and we will surely die without having time to practice Dharma while alive. Second, there are three uncertainties about when death will come: the lifespan of the people of Jambudvipa is uncertain; the causes of death are many, and the causes of life are few; and the body is very fragile, so there is no certainty when death will come. Third, at the time of death, nothing but the Dharma can help us: body, possessions, relatives, and friends cannot help.) There are three roots, nine reasons, and three conclusions, which are the same in both old and new traditions. Just as the nature of fire and salt is inherent from the beginning, there is no being that is not inherently of the nature of death from the moment of birth. Generally, even animals know that there is death and that they will eventually die. Birds and wild animals flee from humans because they fear death. If we examine the number of causes of death and the number of causes of life, we will find that many things that appear to be causes of life actually become causes of death, and there is not a single instance of a cause of death becoming a cause of life. Therefore, death is certain.

If it is uncertain when a tree will fall, then if one must go to another place now, there is no way to go without preparing food, clothing, hats, shoes, friends, and tools in advance. Moreover, going to the extremely distant and irreversible afterlife, which is inevitable sooner or later, shouldn't one prepare luggage? That luggage is not just food, clothing, and friends, but even one's own body must be abandoned, so that is useless. The real luggage is the acceptance and rejection of good and evil. If you want to abandon harmful luggage and prepare beneficial luggage, there is no other way than Dharma. The reason is that even if the body, possessions, relatives, etc., seem beneficial in this life, they are of no help at the time of death, as is obvious. Therefore, take a close look at whether you have a Dharma that is truly beneficial. For example, today you suddenly have a serious illness, and no medicine can help, and you are sure to die. Relatives are secretly preparing funeral supplies, and you can't eat, can't lift your head, and can't even speak. In this situation, observe your own mind, whether you have the confidence not to fear death. Do you have the confidence that praying to the lama throughout your life will not deceive you? Do you have the perception (འ༵དུ་ཤེས༵, *saṃjñā*, संज्ञा, perception) of being accustomed to Mahayana mind training, like walking in a garden? Do you have the ability (ནུས༵་པ༵, *śakti*, शक्ति, power) to integrate the appearances of the generation stage into the luminosity of the completion stage? Observe whether you are accustomed to the practice of Dzogchen Kadak. In order, there is no previous familiarity with entrusting the mind to this life and the next. Refuge taken at the last minute is difficult to be effective immediately, just as Lyasbyin (ལྷས་སྦྱིན, *Layasbyin*, लयस्बिन्, Lotus Giving) in front of the Teacher, the Compassionate One, Shakyamuni Buddha (སྟོན་པ་ཐུགས་རྗེ་ཅན, *Śāstā Tuhjeychen*, शास्ता तुह्जेय्चेन्, Teacher Compassionate One), fell into the Avici hell without abandoning his body. Even if you immediately take refuge in the Buddha from the depths of your heart, you cannot avoid being struck by lightning, just like it is useless. Now, if it is certain that you will die, and you want to reverse the situation by giving away a mouthful of food, it is a sign that you have not practiced mind training. If you have not mastered any Dharma in this life, the hopes and fears of birth and death at the time of death, and the bonds of dualistic clinging, cannot be liberated by just one recollection. Even unstable clouds staying in the sky can only be dispersed by strong winds. Moreover, even if you are not accustomed to Kadak for dualistic clinging, etc., which you have been familiar with since beginningless time, expecting to be liberated by just slightly changing your mind is deceiving yourself.
