Miscellaneous Teachings of Khenchen Khyentse Norbu. Miscellaneous Teachings of Khenchen Khyentse Norbu. A transcript from when the preliminary practices of Rigdzin Thugthig were taught. The ultimate essence of all the sutra and tantra vehicles taught by our teacher is Ati Yoga. To teach it directly is not beneficial unless one has sharp faculties and prior training. Otherwise, the Dharma and the individual will become confused, and the harm will outweigh the benefit for both teacher and student. Therefore, it is not helpful to aim too high. Kal༵a Ld༵an (Tibetan, Devanagari, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Meaning: Kal༵a Ld༵an) means that the path should be taught in accordance with whether or not one is a suitable vessel and the level of one's faculties. Among these, the disciples to be trained in mantra must have great intelligence and a strong bodhicitta, not just the bodhicitta that most bodhisattvas have. One must have a strong bodhicitta with the desire to quickly attain enlightenment in this life and liberate sentient beings from suffering. Otherwise, even if the Dharma is Dzogchen, if the person has not become Dzogchen, it will be confusing. "Guidance" is like a blind person wandering on the edge of a cliff being rescued from the bad path by someone with eyes and led to safety. From beginningless time, sentient beings whose eyes have been closed by the darkness of ignorance are guided to the state of Buddhahood by showing them the correct path in order to save them from the suffering of samsara and the karmic cliff. However, one cannot be liberated from the cliff by merely hearing and knowing the path. Just as one must gradually traverse the mountains and rivers and not abandon the path until one reaches safety, one should not be content with merely hearing the Dharma. One must put into practice the key points of what to abandon and adopt as taught by the kind lama and not be satisfied until one has reached the end. Merely hearing and obtaining many teachings will not help. It is not possible to attain enlightenment by that alone. In the actual method of guidance, the preliminary practices that make one a suitable vessel for the path, the generation and completion stages that are the basis of the path, and the ultimate guidance of Kadag, the key point of the path, must be gradually integrated into one's practice. The preliminary practices are both common to sutra and uncommon to tantra. Among these, there are two types of preliminary practices: common preliminary practices and guidance preliminary practices. The first is meditation, which means being able to use the mind as one pleases for virtuous activities. Its thorns are family, relatives, and so on.

Having fled from the land of hatred, relying on a solitary hermitage. Abandon all the thoughts of negative habits with various methods. When starting to enter a session, first sit comfortably on a cushion in the lotus position. Keep the body upright. Eyes focused on the tip of the nose. Abdomen slightly extended outward. Lips slightly touching. Shoulders extended or tongue touching the palate, whichever is appropriate, and adjusting these seven points, make the body (ལུས༵,kāya,body, body) disciplined (རྣལ༵,viśuddha, pure, pure), subdued (དུ༵,dam, taming, taming), and lowered (དབ༵བ,baba, descend, descend). Perform the nine-section wind or three-section wind cleansing. First, block the left nostril with the ring finger of the left hand, and from the right nostril, visualize that all obstacles to achieving enlightenment, especially all diseases that have become obstacles to it, are expelled in the form of pus and blood, and exhale three times. Then, conversely, visualize all obstacles, especially upper demons, lower demons, and all kinds of demons, being expelled in the form of frogs, snakes, scorpions, and poisonous insects. From both nostrils, visualize all karma, afflictions, sins, and obscurations being expelled in the form of smoke, liquid, and coal ash, making the speech (ང༵ག་,vāc,speech, speech) disciplined (རྣལ༵,viśuddha, pure, pure), subdued (དུ༵,dam, taming, taming), and lowered (དབ༵བ,baba, descend, descend). Just as a spotless white cloth is needed to display the key points of the mind, completely cut off the thoughts of negative habits, so that the target can be placed at will, making the mind (སེམ༵ས་,citta, mind, mind) disciplined (རྣལ༵,viśuddha, pure, pure), subdued (དུ༵,dam, taming, taming), and lowered (དབ༵བ,baba, descend, descend). (After determining the nature, order, and number of all targets, visualize a coarse body in the mind, and strongly make a vow, thinking that you will never abandon your current state.) As it says in the sutra: Mind is the chief, mind is very swift, it goes at the head of all phenomena. Therefore, it is very important to correct the motivation. Therefore, the Sakya master's advice to the venerable Manjushri, "If attached to this life," and so on, contemplate the four lines of the verse, and a pure motivation of both sutra and tantra will arise. That is, if you do not lower your attention to the phenomena of this life, then whatever dharma you practice will become a tool for this life, and the harm will be greater than the benefit. Even if you seek the benefit of the next life, if you expect the perfections of samsara, the wealth of gods and humans, it is easy to exhaust and seems like happiness, so there is no benefit. Even if you want permanent happiness, the thought of wanting to liberate only yourself will result in a small fruit, and you will not attain great enlightenment. Directly showing the motivation to be abandoned, through the reverse meaning of the first three lines of the verse, shows the broad mind of the Bo (བྱང༵,bodhi, bodhi, bodhi) dhi (ཆུབ༵,citta, awakening, awakening) citta (སེམ༵ས་,citta, mind, mind) for (ཀྱི༵,kṛte,for, for) the (ཀུན༵,sarva, all, all) generation (སློང༵,utpāda,arising, arising) of the mind. Details are in the section on generating bodhicitta and other guidance texts.
