Therefore, one must have equanimity towards all sentient beings, without distinguishing between enemies and friends. The reason is that, from one's own perspective, the desire for happiness and the aversion to suffering are the same for all. From one's own perspective, it generally appears that there are enemies, friends, and neutrals, but if one examines closely, not only in past and future lives, but even in the first and last halves of the year, enemies can become friends, and friends can become enemies. Even if one is certain that this is merely a matter of mental clinging and that there is no certainty in reality, one still clings to the false appearance of "this person is an enemy, this person is a friend." Apart from accumulating the faults of negative actions such as attachment and aversion, there is definitely no need for it. Therefore, one should observe whether one can generate a mind of equanimity towards all beings. First, it is easier to generate if one trains with a neutral person. Eventually, by training with all sentient beings, the order of the latter three immeasurables is not necessarily fixed. Focusing on sentient beings who lack happiness, one thinks, "If only they had happiness and the causes of happiness," which is loving-kindness. Wishing that those who suffer be separated from suffering and the causes of suffering is compassion. Now, focusing on sentient beings who are currently enjoying happiness and the causes of happiness, cultivate joy. The method of cultivation is that one's own mother is most pleasing, and these thoughts arise naturally. If one thinks that all sentient beings have also been one's mother, that they have been kind to oneself, and that one should repay their kindness, it is easy to generate the immeasurables. To understand how they have been one's mother, one must know that one's own life has no beginning, so the number is uncountable. Most of their lives are born from wombs or eggs, so they depend on parents. A single parent cannot be a parent countless times, so one must know that the number of parents is uncountable. The reason one does not believe this is that we do not understand that "the parents of this life are these people." Not only parents, but also the elements, faculties, and intentions of a single sentient being—all of this—the omniscient one has said many times in the scriptures, and one should generate faith in this. It is difficult to become a Mahayana practitioner by being selfish and self-serving, so one should study and contemplate these things carefully. Remembering kindness: For the sake of their children, they do not hesitate to face shame, sin, and bad reputation. They give food, clothing, and wealth that they themselves are unwilling to use to their children without the slightest reluctance, and even think that if they could find something better, they would give it to them. Even ferocious and cruel beasts help their children with whatever knowledge and ability they have. Repaying kindness: If one does not repay kindness, it is not only against the Dharma, but one cannot even be considered a virtuous person in the world.

Moreover, the way of repaying kindness is like throwing sinful food into the ocean, or cutting off one's own Dharma practice for the sake of parents, etc. Such repaying kindness with malice is like holding hands and jumping off a cliff together. The Teacher, Shakyamuni Buddha, along with his Shravaka retinue, taught the Dharma for three months during the summer in the Thirty-Three Heavens (त्रयस्त्रिंश, trayastriṃśa, thirty-three), solely for the purpose of repaying his mother's kindness. If the happiness of Samsara were beneficial, then the Bhagavan should have ascended the throne to care for his parents, rather than ordaining. Therefore, one should also help others with whatever abilities one has. Now, since both body and mind can benefit all sentient beings, and one is in the process of attaining Buddhahood, it is best to practice the supreme method of benefiting others. Merely practicing the Dharma, like offering food and clothing, cannot directly benefit parents. However, because the connection with parents is very close, after attaining Buddhahood, those with the closest connections will be the first to be tamed. After practicing in this way, when a delightful love arises in the mind, seeing all sentient beings as precious, one needs to cultivate loving-kindness and compassion, etc. The method is: benefit is the cause and effect of happiness, and harm is the cause and effect of suffering. Therefore, generate the mind that desires happiness and wishes to be free from suffering, and generate the intention to accomplish these things oneself. These are loving-kindness and compassion. Distinguish the minds of enemies or friends, etc., as specific targets, and from the ten non-virtuous actions, etc., and their result, the Avici hell, to the subtle obscurations to knowledge, as well as the coarse and subtle causes and effects of suffering between incompatible minds, to the subtle virtuous actions, and the happiness of the mind, from the uncontaminated virtuous actions, up to the coarse and subtle causes and effects of happiness between the happiness of the Buddha, cultivate by identifying these as "this is this, that is that." By cultivating in this way, at first, only some intentions will arise. Then, one will think, "I will eliminate faults and accomplish good deeds." Finally, a genuine thought will arise that one can accomplish it alone, without relying on others. This is called higher intention. When this thought matures, one will see that one does not have such abilities now, but the Buddha has such abilities, and thus generate the aspiration Bodhicitta to attain Buddhahood for the benefit of others. Know that this does not arise without cause or condition, and one needs to enter the stage of vast accumulation of merit and purification of obscurations, and thus generate the entering mind. Previously, the refuge objects were not included.
