It is not that one does not take refuge. Firstly, in the sixth chapter of the Vimalakirti Sutra, it says, "One goes by remembering fear and qualities." From two causes, the first is the mind of fear arising from remembering the faults of the three realms of samsara; the second is the mind of faith through knowing the qualities of the Three Jewels who will definitely protect one from that. Therefore, to generate renunciation, one needs both the mind of wanting to be liberated from samsara and the mind of wanting to attain liberation, so if one does not know whether the latter can attain true liberation, one will not generate the desire to attain it, so that is the reason why one must first realize selflessness. Because going for refuge to those equal to or inferior to oneself cannot protect one, one must rely on a special object. For example, now if a weak person tormented by fear seeks refuge, just like relying on an official who can protect one, one must have these two causes. The qualities of being able to protect are: the Buddha himself and others have perfected both purposes, so because he himself is liberated from fear, he can teach others the method of protection. The Dharma, through hearing and contemplating the Dharma of scripture and practicing the Dharma of realization, the practitioner himself can actually protect himself from the fear of samsara. The Sangha, if one associates with them, one's own faults will decrease more than before, and one can newly begin to generate qualities, so one must go for refuge by having faith in these. If one does not have these two causes, going for refuge is just lip service. Secondly, the object. Taking just the supports of contemplation such as painted and sculpted images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and scriptures as objects, or not just admiring the actual Buddha who went to India, or the Dharma of that time, and the Sangha of Shariputra and others, but now the one who teaches oneself the method of liberation from samsara is the Buddha, the sound and words of scripture that make one's own continuum the cause of liberation from samsara and its meaning is the Dharma of realization, associating with whom makes one's continuum better and does not waste time, the virtuous persons who have entered the path like oneself are the Sangha. The Omniscient One said that the object of refuge of the Sutra system, which uses the cause as the path, is the cause refuge, and the object of refuge of the Mantra system, which uses the result as the path, is the result refuge, so this is the unique tenet of Mantra. So, in general, the Three Jewels that have already arisen in other continuums are the cause.

The objects of refuge, and the Three Jewels that can be accomplished in one's own mindstream in the future, are the objects of refuge of the result. Therefore, in order to accomplish the result refuge, one takes refuge in the Three Jewels that have already appeared in the mindstreams of others. Third, the way to take refuge. For these objects, one should sincerely place one's hopes, regard the Buddha as the guide to the path of liberation, the Dharma as the actual path to practice, and the Sangha as the companions on the path. Without seeking other refuges from this, directing one's mind towards the direction of the refuge, or following after it, is called taking refuge. If one has this thought, then reciting words and even joining palms together becomes pure refuge. Fourth, although there are many things to learn, to put it briefly. Just as there are three objects of refuge, there are also three things to protect. Having taken refuge in the Buddha, one should rely on a pure spiritual friend. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, one should strive to abandon and adopt the methods of liberation from the fear of samsara. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, if one can find a good friend who can increase one's qualities, one should associate with them. If not, relying on the dakinis and the white-sided deities is also acceptable. In short, as the lama and others have said, the Buddha is the one who has exhausted faults and perfected qualities, the Dharma is the teaching and realization that can be expressed, and the Sangha is the one who takes the form of a spiritual friend for the beings to be tamed in the degenerate age. Regarding the guru, who is the embodiment of the Three Jewels and the wish-fulfilling jewel, as inseparable from the real Buddha, one should rely on him with pure intention and action, and do as he says. That is enough. Therefore, one should not regard the Three Jewels as three separate individuals. Without the vows of refuge, just like a house in the sky, even the vows of a lay follower cannot arise. Therefore, one must obtain the vows, but there cannot be a vow that does not need to be protected after obtaining it, so at least these three must be protected. For example, a patient who is afflicted by illness needs a skilled doctor, medicine, treatment, and nursing. In general, the compassionate teacher has taught countless Dharma doors depending on the capacities of the beings to be tamed, but this does not mean that one person must practice all of them. Instead, one should receive Dharma according to one's own abilities. One should not easily promise too many vows and precepts. Once one has promised, if one does not practice as one promised in front of the guru, then violating the root downfall of the Sugata's teachings will surely lead to the Avici hell. Therefore, for the Dharma, one should first be good at listening, then be good at thinking, and finally be good at practicing, so that it can flourish. If one enters forcefully without ability, there will be faults.
