The majestic is, arising from seeing beautiful places and various wondrous sights, and obtaining the desired wealth in the heart. The humorous, referred to as ridicule, is the state of ridicule arising from hearing secrets that should not be proclaimed in gatherings, etc. The terrifying is the state of terror, arising from seeing rakshasas, tigers, leopards, etc., or hearing unbearable sounds, and the resulting fear, etc. The disgusting is the state of revulsion, arising from seeing and hearing repulsive things such as ugly forms and rotting flesh, and the resulting nausea. The furious is the state of intensity, gathering anger through intense actions of body and speech, such as cursing and beating. The peaceful is the state of tranquility, making asceticism and vows, etc., the cause of benefiting oneself, and it follows the state of grace. Thus it is said. Likewise, in the "Treasury of Precious Qualities," it is said: Graceful, brave, displeasing, fierce, humorous, and terrifying, compassionate, majestic, and peaceful, these are the nine sentiments of dance. The teacher Ravasana said: Graceful, brave, displeasing, humorous, fierce, and terrifying, compassionate, majestic, and peaceful, and pleasing, these are ten sentiments. Although some say there are ten sentiments, it is not mentioned, as elaboration suffices. From Nyuk Chokhor Ling, a response in the form of a commentary was given to the question slip of Gelong Gelek Palden. 7th. Striking the Ghandi. In the Vinaya texts, it is said that having all the characteristics complete has great benefits, but for these, there is no examination and analysis of having all the characteristics complete, nor has a reliable source to inquire from been found. Because of the inferiority of the wisdom of hearing, a reliable source in the scriptures has not been found either. After striking one hundred and eight times, is it permissible to strike continuously without any fixed rules for the loudness of the sound or the length of the interval, except for the three "tok" sounds? In Jetsun Drakgyal's "Three Bases Ritual," the method of striking the three melodies and three "tok" sounds is explained according to a certain tradition, but it is not regarded as one's own standard. Because it is heard that the Ghandi is spoken of in the sutras, nothing has been decided. In the "Three Bases Ritual," in order to gather the Sangha for food and drink, three melodies are struck, and at the end, the "tok" sound is struck.

Having performed three great [rituals]. For the purpose of gathering [the sangha] for activities such as confession and listening to the Dharma, it is said that there are "three past rounds." What are these "three past rounds"? And what are the benefits and methods of striking the Ghaṇṭā according to your tradition? Answer: The Ghaṇṭā, if its qualities are not complete, there will be great faults. The sutra says: "Made from immeasurable bad wood, when struck, it will not produce sound. If this Buddha-mother [i.e., the Ghaṇṭā] is struck, it will certainly bring harm to the region." And so on, it is explained in detail. In the root sutra, sandalwood and bilva, etc., are mentioned. Even if all of these cannot be obtained, it is said that it can be made from "Ose" wood. Currently, Seng-ldeng wood is used. Regarding the size, some say that the large size is one hundred and eight, but it is not explicitly stated in the sutra, so it is round. Therefore, the sutra says: "The size should be eighty-four finger-widths in water measure." The Chinese version also has the equivalent of eighty-four. Therefore, the usual size is eighty-four finger-widths in length, two finger-widths in height, and six finger-widths in width, with the middle being high and the two ends gradually decreasing with eight sides, each of the three parts being two finger-widths. The top is described as resembling a frog's head, which is now called "Sbab-le." Although some people make wine vessels from the Ghaṇṭā, it is not mentioned in the sutra, so it is not appropriate. The mallet for striking the Ghaṇṭā is made of the same material, with an actual length of twelve finger-widths and a holding part of twelve finger-widths each, totaling twenty-four finger-widths. The top resembles a weasel's head. The method of striking the Ghaṇṭā: The "ཥ་" in the Chinese version refers to an inclined short line, to prevent monks from suddenly rising from meditation. Three short lines are struck at the beginning. Then, if it is for the purpose of confession or other activities, it is struck once. Generally, for the purpose of gathering the sangha, repeating the striking three times means striking the previous one three times. The sutra says: "Like adorned with seven notes, it should be struck in the order of arising." Therefore, each round has thirty-six strikes. From the first to the eighteenth, the sound gradually increases, and from the nineteenth to the thirty-sixth, the sound gradually decreases, striking like grains of barley. When striking three times, the same striking is repeated three times, totaling thirty-six in a group, striking one hundred and eight times. The method of striking is: first strike three short lines, then slowly strike each round, and finally strike three large ending sounds in succession. In short, it is a song.
