Therefore, by looking at its essence, it appears as the union of appearance and emptiness, with all external appearances remaining and all internal awareness remaining. At that time, the essence of mind, birth and death, permanence and annihilation, abiding and moving, and the objects and subjects of experience are not established in any way. The naked awareness is clear and bright. By maintaining that state without distraction, not only will merit increase, but also going to great places like Gar, etc., may appear as various supporting conditions for the flourishing of inner virtue. However, at the moment of appearance, if one can abide in the essence of awareness, which is free from hope and doubt, and free from affirmation and negation, in its own nature, which is free from elaboration and clinging, then merit will increase. Even in fierce places and charnel grounds, if one does not grasp the view of suchness, which is free from elaboration, then even cutting will not hit the point. Once grasped by that view, then one should practice whatever merit arises as a result of that. If one does not make ghosts and spirits the object of cutting, but instead makes harming others and one's own survival the path, then it will be difficult to accomplish. Therefore, one should strive to ensure that this basis for practice is alive and well, which is the best way. In general, if one's experience and realization of virtue reaches such a level that any distracting circumstances are grasped by the key points of virtue, then just as daytime appearances are integrated into virtue, nighttime sleep and dreams will also gradually transform into virtue. The key points of these have been mentioned in the instructions on Great Compassion, and you will be clear by looking at them. These instructions, spoken in the form of a song of advice, are intended to please your mind. We rejoice that your elder brother has a mind of remorse and restraint for sinful deeds. Because of regretting what has been done in the past, one should advise him to abandon sin in the future when he has freedom, which is the necessity of meeting a holy person. Although the sacred substances of the great liberation treasure are not visible, they are important, so they are offered in this way. Our nectar and scented water torma are also offered as you wish. And all the relatives, headed by your father and uncle, are regarded as having the connection of aspiration prayers, so they will certainly not be abandoned within the scope of prayer, and because that place is farther than a distant place, it is difficult to come in person. However, one should keep in mind that the circumstances of coming and going do not steal the key points of practice, and pay attention to the immediate behavior, that is, the body's liveli-

It is important not to become an obstacle to the method. In this way, by trusting the lama and the instructions, adjust your behavior, and through practicing these, generate self-confidence. In fact, our stream of consciousness also exists in an indivisible way in the expanse of the non-elaborate mind itself. Since that is the case, even if you want to seek a lama from the outside, that is just a manifestation of conceptual thought. Still, I pray that the wish for an encounter will be fulfilled before long. All the manifestations of elaboration concerning names and places, having eliminated the two extremes of hope and doubt, may the fortunate ones rest comfortably in the vast expanse of equality, openness, and immensity. Thus it is said.

Answers to Doubts about Patience. In response to the doubts of Thubten Lobsang Zopa, by dissolving the refuge into oneself, one remains in a natural state of being inseparable from oneself, vast and expansive, without clinging. If one relies on movement to abide, such a wavering state of abiding is not a characteristic abiding. A characteristic abiding is not dependent on staying or moving. It does not fall into the realm of the outer six consciousnesses or the inner consciousness, nor does it fall into the realm of arising and ceasing, or permanence and annihilation. It is an abiding without a place to abide. Like the vast awareness that is nothing at all, beyond the realm of speech, this is called spontaneous abiding. Relying on it, the body becomes light, the head feels heavy, and the body naturally relaxes, or one feels a swaying sensation. This is called the body of wisdom, which has been thoroughly trained. Thorough training is the characteristic of calm abiding that can be induced. That is, without accepting or rejecting whatever arises from the six consciousnesses, one abides without alteration. Then, turning the attention inward, one observes the essence of that abiding. When the observer arrives, the object of observation ceases to exist, but the way of grasping changes. Therefore, when abiding, observe the essence of abiding. When moving, turn the attention inward and observe the essence of moving. Although there is nothing to observe, that naked awareness, free from all knowable and knowing, beyond the mind, is released naturally without any fabrication, and maintained with clarity and sharpness. One naturally abides in uninterrupted meditation. At this time, although it may seem like conceptual thought, because it has already nakedly emerged as the wisdom that does not conceptualize its own nature, the connection between grasping and being grasped is severed. Awareness is clear and unwavering in its own place. However, when conditions arise, and it manifests like the five poisons, at that very moment there is nothing but awareness. Therefore, when nakedly grasping the essence, wisdom becomes even clearer, and all the dharmas of acceptance and rejection are liberated into self-awareness. That is, it is not that one meditates on the non-conceptual state of abiding when there is no distraction, but at this time, one maintains that clear and bright naked awareness, relaxed and without distraction. Also, when awareness arises in relation to an object, do not look at whatever arises, but rather maintain the awareness that has shifted away from the object, in a clear and naked state, without distraction. In this way, one can abide in the state of original purity as it is.
