Do not engage in improper conduct, do not rely on mantras with bad reputations, do not rely on substances of vows that lack characteristics, do not slander the qualities of the wise, do not reveal secret teachings to those who are not vessels, do not abandon mantras with characteristics and disciples who are vessels, do not separate the meaning of emptiness and the symbols of father and mother, do not engage in internal strife even in jest, do not consume leftovers used by others, do not be arrogant about the seat of the lama, do not break the boundaries between oneself and others, do not be controlled by agitation and dullness, do not interrupt recitations and rituals with idle talk, do not transgress the mudras of empowerment and do not forget the symbols, do not disturb the mandala of yogis and do not reverse the power of beings, and do not fail to uphold the guru at the crown of your head. Second, the extensive explanation has two parts: the essence and the divisions. First, the essence is: the mind that vows not to transgress the specific meaning of what is to be protected, along with its seeds, is the lineage that encompasses the root and branches. As it is said in the later tantra of the Secret Essence: "Whoever does not stray from diligence, even in dreams speaks of vows, taking vows is considered discipline." Second, there are root vows and branch vows. The first is: "The root is the three of the lama's body, speech, and mind, divided into nine nines, twenty-seven." That is, the root vows of the three vajras are combined with the lama, because one's own three doors are vowed to be inseparable from the three vajras of the lama, the embodiment of all Buddhas, or it is heavier than the sound of "Guru," meaning that if violated, it is difficult to purify. This is the way of establishing vows according to the Mind Series of the Great Perfection of Naturalness. Because the vows of the Great Perfection transcend the limits of protection, there is no transgression or degeneration. However, in order for the first practitioners on the path to purify their own continuum, the three doors should not transgress the vows of the three vajras. Among these divisions, it is said in the "Distinction of Vows": "From the three ripenings of beings, it is said to be the three vows of mantra. Distinguishing their differences, from the three of body, speech, and mind, each and every one has nine nines, known by the aspects of entry and action."

Therefore, the root body, speech, and mind are divided into outer, inner, and secret three types. Each of these is further divided into three, making a total of twenty-seven. First, regarding the vows of the body, divided into three sets of three: the outer, inner, and secret three are, respectively: taking what has not been given in order, engaging in impure conduct, and abandoning the three of taking life. The inner three are: cursing parents, Vajra siblings, and one's own body; cursing the Dharma and individuals; and abandoning the acts of beating and striking one's own body, as well as despising and tormenting oneself through asceticism. The secret three are: intending to strike the bodies of Vajra siblings and cursing ornaments; striking Vajra sisters and tormenting the consort of the Guru; stepping over the shadow of the Guru and engaging in unrestrained bodily and verbal conduct in the Guru's presence are all to be abandoned. Second, regarding the vows of speech, divided into three sets of three: the outer three are: telling lies, slander, and speaking words that defame others are all to be abandoned. The inner three are: scolding and defaming those who speak Dharma words, contemplate meaning in their minds, and practice the nature of reality are to be abandoned. The secret three are: the words of Vajra siblings, the mudra of the Guru and the words of attendants, and despising and contradicting the Guru's teachings are all to be abandoned. Third, regarding the vows of mind, divided into three sets of three: the outer three are: harmful intent, greed, and wrong views are all to be abandoned. The inner three are: wrong conduct that is unrestrained, wrong meditation that is sinking and excitement, as well as straying and obscurations, and wrong views that are clinging to permanence and annihilation are all to be abandoned. The secret three are: not keeping in mind the three of view, meditation, and conduct in each session of the day and night, not keeping in mind the Yidam deity, and not keeping in mind the Guru Yoga and love for Dharma friends are all to be abandoned. The meaning of these texts has now been explained. Now, to briefly explain the root vows as they are taught in the tantras and agamas. In the General Sutra, it says: "Body, speech, and mind Vajra, protect and." In the Secret Essence Tantra, it says: "Do not abandon the unsurpassed, respect the Guru, do not interrupt mantra and mudra, cherish those who enter the correct path, do not speak of secret meanings to outsiders. These are the five roots, the supreme vow of accomplishment and protection." These five mentioned are also condensed into the three roots. If these are not broken, even if the branches are broken, they will gradually be restored.
