Therefore, these are the root downfalls, the cause for sentient beings to fall into the great hells. Regarding taking vows, if one cannot protect the Pratimoksha vows, then giving the precepts is permissible. However, if one has taken the Bodhisattva vows, the transgression becomes extremely heavy, because one has abandoned the very promise made before the Buddhas and their heirs to accomplish the benefit and happiness of beings. As it says in the Bodhicharyavatara: "Having invited all beings with a firm mind to the supreme bliss, how could one go to a happy rebirth if one deceives them all?" And: "If destroying the happiness of even one sentient being causes oneself to degenerate, what need is there to mention destroying the happiness of all embodied beings pervading the limitless sky?" Therefore, having contemplated these faults, one should strive not to be stained by downfalls. However, if downfalls occur due to the four causes of ignorance, carelessness, abundant afflictions, and disrespect, one should rise from the transgression through the means of restoration. The term "lapse of time" refers to dividing the day into three parts and the night into three parts, dividing them into six periods. If one arrives at the end of one-sixth of the day and night with an antidote, then that person's discipline will not be interrupted and will become completely pure. For example, if one commits a downfall at any point in the early, middle, or late part of the first period, such as in the morning, then at any point in the early, middle, or late part of the immediately following period, such as at lunchtime, one can restore the downfall by confessing it without being separated from the mind of enlightenment. Thus, if one does not exceed the limit for confession, even if one repeatedly commits root downfalls, one can restore them through confession, and therefore it is possible to remedy them. If one exceeds the limit for confession, then the discipline is lost, and it is not possible to restore it through remedy. One must first engage in confession and restraint, and then take the vows again according to the ritual, without a fixed number of times. Even so, the reason why the repetition of vows is not mentioned here is to avoid thinking that even if one loses the vows, it is easy to take them again, and therefore not being diligent. Just as it is not explicitly stated in the Compendium of Trainings, it is done in the same way here. However, there, by quoting the Sutra of the Close Attendant, it explains the difference between whether or not it is possible to remedy the root downfalls of Hearers and Bodhisattvas, and it is evident that it is actually stated. Because the means of remedy is nothing other than confessing transgressions and taking vows. Therefore, regarding the method of restoration, there are three types according to the difference in faculties, of which the intermediate faculty is the realm of the gods...

Those who diligently strive should suffice by making the seven-branch offering and confessing in front of their own yidam deity. If one wishes to confess in front of the deity of all vidyas, the noble Akashagarbha, one should confess without interruption day and night. From the time one commits a transgression, one should bathe and cleanse oneself, burn incense, and recite the name of the noble Akashagarbha while prostrating, and pray, "May the noble one show his face to me and purify my sins." By praying intensely in this way, either in reality or in a dream, according to one's fortune, he will show the means of liberation from downfall in whatever form is appropriate, from human to bird. If he does not show it, then one should rise at dawn, cleanse oneself, face east, and offer incense, saying, "Dawn, dawn, great compassionate one, great good one, as soon as you rise in Jambudvipa, may you spread compassion over me! Akashagarbha, endowed with great compassion, I also urge you quickly with my words, please show me in my dream by what means I desire to quickly confess downfalls, and the means by which to obtain the methods and wisdom of the noble ones of the Great Vehicle." After saying this, one should lie down to sleep, and at the time of dawn, the form of Akashagarbha will appear in a dream according to one's fortune, thereby allowing the downfall to be confessed. Those of lesser faculties should confess through the four powers. Among these, the power of reliance is twofold: the object of reliance for confession is to invite the virtuous spiritual friend or the particularly special object of the Tathagata to the center of the offerings and visualize them, or to contemplate the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas in the sky in front of oneself. The reliance of one's own continuum is refuge and bodhicitta, based on the compassion of wanting to liberate all sentient beings and the complete bodhicitta, taking common refuge, and especially praying to the chief queen to protect from fear. The power of repudiation is to remember sins and transgressions, and with intense regret, to confess by reciting the names of whatever sins and transgressions have occurred. The power of applying remedies is to take hold of the names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, to build images and stupas, to prostrate to, make offerings to, and circumambulate the objects of veneration, and to read or recite the profound sutras and tantras.
