Chapter Three: The Bodhisattva All the victorious ones of the ten directions, together with their sons, Arise from the mind of the union of emptiness and compassion. Therefore, to the mind of enlightenment and its teachers, I pay homage to the virtuous spiritual friends who show the path. Without straying into the ravines of eternalism and nihilism, From the bliss of entering the middle way of scripture and reason, May the nectar stream of well-spoken words flow, And may fortunate beings enjoy the feast of immortality. Secondly, explaining the vows of a Bodhisattva has three parts: How the Teacher taught the category of the pāramitās; how to summarize and uphold them through explanation and practice; and how to ascertain the object to be expressed by upholding them in this way. First: The Great Sage, guide of beings in the Fortunate Aeon, On Vulture Peak and other places, to those with the Mahāyāna lineage, Taught immeasurable, vast collections of teachings. This means that this Teacher, although he had already become a Buddha countless, inconceivable aeons ago, in order to lead the beings of this realm out of suffering in this Fortunate Aeon, again demonstrated the attainment of unsurpassed great enlightenment through the twelve deeds. As it says in the Uttaratantra: "With great compassion, he knows the world, and having gazed upon all the world, without moving from the dharmakāya, with various emanations, he shows birth and arising, and descending from the abode of Tuṣita," and so on, "In all impure realms, he shows existence as long as saṃsāra lasts." Therefore, after becoming a Buddha, he turned the three wheels of dharma in stages or simultaneously, depending on the minds of those to be tamed. As it says in the King of Sūtras, the Array of Qualities: "I have not spoken anything, yet it appears extensively to sentient beings. Whenever they desire gradually, it is the same for all of them. But for those who enter at once, the complete categories of dharma appear. That is the greatness of the speech that fulfills wishes like a wish-fulfilling jewel." In particular, how the Teacher, the Great Sage, taught the vast and extensive collection of the Bodhisattva is as follows: to the general assembly, who had become beings of the Mahāyāna lineage; and specifically to the four kinds of assemblies, as well as gods, nāgas, asuras, and gandharvas,

And other common retinues and uncommon retinues, immeasurable Bodhisattvas residing on the vast land. Starting from the place of Vulture Peak (Grdhrakuta), which focuses on teaching the training of the mind, the Vinaya of the Sutra Pitaka, the distinctions of the Bodhisattva's precepts are established, as well as the profound and vast Samadhi of the Sutra Pitaka, and the Abhidharma of the Sutra Pitaka, the various distinctions of the stages and paths and Dharani Samadhi, as taught, are the middle teachings of the Buddha, the aspects of the Dharma of no characteristics. Moreover, not fixed in one place, focusing on teaching the training of superior wisdom, are the three Pitakas within the Abhidharma, namely, the method of subduing afflictions with ease and simplicity, teaching the Vinaya of the Abhidharma; and the method of entering the meaning of profound suchness, teaching the Sutra of the Abhidharma; and the vast aggregates, elements, sense bases, etc., and especially establishing the essence of the Tathagatagarbha, which is the Abhidharma of the Abhidharma. These are the final teachings of the Buddha, teaching the aspects of definitive meaning, the Dharma wheel of perfect distinction. Among these, the first of the three Dharma wheels, because it mainly teaches conventional truth, is unanimously considered to be provisional meaning. However, there are many different views on whether the middle and final two are of provisional or definitive meaning. However, there is no Sutra Pitaka passage that clearly states that the middle is of definitive meaning and the latter is of provisional meaning. Moreover, it also contradicts the meaning of the analogy of medicine for the sick and examples for learning letters. Therefore, my own view is that the middle is half provisional and half definitive, or temporarily definitive, while the final is considered definitive. This is because it is clearly explained in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, and the Angulimaliya Sutra, etc. Thus, in the Samdhinirmocana Sutra, it is also said: The turning of the Dharma wheel is also, supreme, necessary, of provisional meaning, and has become the basis of disputes. This is how the situation of the first two Dharma wheels is described. In the final situation, it is said: The third Dharma wheel of inconceivable and wondrous Dharma has been turned, and this turning of the Dharma wheel is, not supreme, not necessary, of definitive meaning, and has not become the basis of disputes. And in the Nirvana Sutra and the Dharanimandala Sutra, the analogy of milk medicine and the analogy of polishing jewels, etc., are combined with the order of guiding beings and explained.
