That is, all the precepts of aspiration and practice (Bodhicitta) should be understood and protected without deterioration. If they deteriorate, efforts should be made to restore them. Secondly, the detailed explanation is divided into three: explaining the four categories of downfall, learning how to practice after understanding what is allowed and forbidden, and actually explaining the method of purification. The first is: Whoever does not examine what is reasonable or unreasonable, Whether to create or to reject, or to remain indifferent is acceptable. All actions that exceed what is appropriate are categories of downfall. Giving up small things to accomplish great things is an image, All things that are not within the scope of ability have no downfall. Striving for what is impossible is its image. That is, whoever, for any action, must examine whether it is feasible with their own intellectual ability, rather than not examining the reasons for acceptance and rejection and whether it is reasonable. Striving to do what should be rejected, or rejecting what should be done, or remaining indifferent to the basis of acceptance and rejection, are all accompanied by downfall. This also has four

Killing with anger is an image of falling. Not killing with compassion is not falling. Benefiting others without killing is an image of not falling. In accumulating virtue and Dharma, being stingy and not giving is falling. Not giving with a beneficial mind is an image of falling. Giving with a pure mind is not falling. Giving to harm others is an image of not falling. In accomplishing the meaning of sentient beings, not providing care for the sick is falling. Not providing care for the sick in order to accomplish great things is an image of falling. Providing care for the sick with love is not falling. If there are others providing care for the sick, but one abandons one's own reading and other important matters to provide care, it is an image of not falling. Secondly, if it benefits others, the seven non-virtues of body and speech, there are occasions for permission, and in meaning, it is virtue. It means that if it turns into a method of benefiting others, then among the prohibitions against the ten non-virtuous actions, there are occasions for permitting the seven of body and speech. For example, killing an executioner to save many lives is like killing; stealing from the wealthy to give to those whose lives are in danger due to hunger is like not giving; engaging in sexual misconduct with a woman who is tormented by desire and certain to die in order to save her is like sexual misconduct; hiding someone to free a person who is certain to be killed is like lying; separating two people who have been deceived by evil friends and led to evil destinies is like divisive speech; dispelling the sorrow of those oppressed by grief, or seeing the need to engage in Dharma because of a love of talking, speaking idle words such as stories and legends, and scolding to turn people away from non-virtuous actions is like harsh speech. Although these appear to be non-virtuous, they are virtuous in meaning, so they can be done. Because there is no other good or evil apart from the mind's inclination. As it is said in the Four Hundred Verses: "The Bodhisattva's intention, whether virtuous or non-virtuous, all turns into virtue, because intention is the most important." And in Cleansing the Obscurations of the Mind, it says: "If a monk urges his old father, saying 'Hurry up,' and he dies as a result, it is not an action of immediate retribution. With a good intention, placing a shoe on the Buddha's head, and another wiping it off, both will attain kingship. Therefore, the root of good intention, accumulate it."

Sin exists within them. As stated in the "Twenty Verses on Discipline": "With compassion and love, there is no fault in a virtuous mind." Therefore, the actions of good and evil depend on the inclination of the mind itself, so the three actions of mind should never be neglected. Third, regarding the two traditions: The tradition of the venerable Nagarjuna is: If the time is missed, confess before the noble Avalokiteśvara. If a downfall occurs in a dream, confess in the morning prayer. Reciting the remaining three aggregates three times day and night will destroy it, this is the Nagarjuna tradition. In general, the causes for abandoning the bodhisattva vows are threefold: the basis is abandoning the aspiration mind, the contradiction is the occurrence of root downfalls, and the condition for abandonment is giving up the vows. Among these, abandoning all the previously mentioned eighteen or twenty root downfalls is the realm of sharp faculties, so for those with medium and dull faculties, it is their respective trainings combined with the strength of their own minds. By guarding these trainings, one will not degenerate from the bodhisattva's training. In the ceremony of taking vows, one first takes the aspiration, saying: "I will generate the mind of enlightenment." Then one says: "Likewise, I will gradually train in the trainings." Thus, one gradually trains by combining it with the power of one's own mind, rather than vowing to learn all the trainings from the very beginning. The faults of degeneration are: The general faults of downfalls are threefold: First, breaking one's vows will become a cause for blame, deceiving the teacher Buddha, making the Buddha displeased, deceiving sentient beings, making them displeased, and deceiving oneself, harming one's own benefit and becoming a cause for blame by all. Second, losing the meaning of the name, all undesirable things will gather, like a king losing his kingdom, it is inauspicious in this life and one will be tormented by sorrow at the time of death. Third, the fault is heavy, and in the future one will fall into the lower realms and it will be difficult to escape from them. As stated in the "Compendium of Trainings": "The Complete Buddha said: 'Without effort, one will go to the lower realms.'" In particular, the faults of root downfalls are: All the roots of virtue of the previously generated bodhicitta will be reduced to ashes, and by that very act, one deceives the Three Jewels, including the gods, and therefore, one will generally fall into the lower realms, and in particular, one will be born in the great hell of sentient beings.
