The method of practice is also explained as primarily guarding for beginners, purifying through aspiration and conduct, abandoning by dwelling in the seven impure grounds, and increasing by dwelling in the three pure grounds. For details, one should consult the Compendium of Trainings itself. Here, it is a concise instruction for accomplishing the complete fulfillment of those practices. As it says in that very text, "Accomplishment is also truly abandoning." Therefore, in order to generate all the virtuous dharmas that have not yet arisen, which are conducive to the practice of complete enlightenment, and to maintain and increase those that have already arisen, one should first generate a strong aspiration and strive in the three doors of body, speech, and mind. One should engage in diligence without procrastination, not forgetting the virtuous object, and train in holding the mind and abiding correctly. Similarly, in order not to generate all the sinful and non-virtuous dharmas that have not yet arisen, which are obstacles to the practice of complete enlightenment, and to abandon those that have already arisen, one should also generate aspiration and so forth in the same way. As it says in the Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, "Having fully known all aspects of the opposing factors and their retinues, diligence arises in four ways to abandon them." Furthermore, the mind of enlightenment that has already arisen should be cultivated by striving to apply the three methods of guarding, purifying, and increasing. As it says in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds, "Thus, this mind of mine should be well-held and well-guarded. What is the use of many ascetic practices other than guarding this mind?" That is to say, guarding that very mind so that it does not decline is to keep the mind abiding in the nature of aspiration and engagement, which is the place of conducive conditions to be learned. Purifying the defilements of that mind is to turn away from all misdeeds, which is the instruction for abandoning opposing factors. The method of increasing virtue is to train in exchanging one's own happiness for the suffering of others, which is the instruction for conducive conditions. Thus, it is also said in the Engaging in Bodhisattva Deeds, "If one does not completely exchange one's own happiness for the suffering of others, one will not attain Buddhahood and there will be no happiness even in samsara." Secondly, always rely on mindfulness, awareness, and vigilance. As it says in the Compendium of Trainings, "Not separated from vigilance, mindfulness and awareness, and proper attention." Thus, always guarding

Guarding the mind is done by relying on three things: mindfulness that does not forget, clear comprehension that examines whether faults have arisen in one's own mind-stream, and diligence that takes seriously being careful about what to adopt and abandon. As it says in the Bodhicaryāvatāra: "Those who wish to guard their minds should cultivate mindfulness and clear comprehension. Even if their lives are at stake, they should guard them well. I join my palms in reverence." And as it says in the Suhrllekha: "Diligence is the source of nectar, while carelessness is said by the Buddha to be the cause of death. Therefore, you should always be diligent with respect, in order to increase virtue." Third is: "In the four activities of going, staying, eating, and sleeping, like the sutra on the complete purification of conduct, whatever you do, dedicate it with words that are in accordance with reason." In general, at all times during the four activities, examine the actions of the three doors, and without losing mindfulness and clear comprehension. When walking, look about a yoke's length ahead. When meeting others, greet them with a smile, saying "Welcome," and make others happy with pleasant words. When sitting, sit upright in the lotus position, and engage in whatever practice is appropriate, such as teaching, listening, or meditating. When eating, remember the Three Jewels, offer the first portion and torma, abandon attachment and desire, and consume only as much as is beneficial for nourishing the body and benefiting insects, with the intention of benefiting them, and dedicate the food. When sleeping at night, lie down on your right side with your head facing north, remember death, remember the Three Jewels as your pillow, make the determination to rise for virtuous activities, and sleep with your mind abiding in the nature of reality with the perception of light. When waking up in the morning, get up remembering the Three Jewels and the mind of enlightenment. If you see evil in a dream, confess it immediately, and if you see good, rejoice. In this way, spend your time in Dharma practices that benefit yourself and others. As it says in the Sutra Ornament: "When a bodhisattva acts, in whatever way the senses engage in various objects, in that way, with words that are in accordance with reason, he manifests it for the benefit of sentient beings." In particular, as it says in the Sutra on the Complete Purification of Conduct in the Avatamsaka Sutra.
