They also hold this view. For the Madhyamikas who assert the absence of inherent existence, although there is no difference in ultimate truth, there exist two traditions: establishing the commitment of self-emptiness, saying that what is established in conventional truth is like an illusion, and solely applying consequentialist arguments, thereby refuting even the mere conventional truth that is accepted. For the Madhyamikas who establish other-emptiness, all knowable things are considered to be of three natures, and there is a distinction of categorizing them into the two, the imputed and the thoroughly established. Therefore, two different ways of identifying phenomena have arisen: in the treatises of the Yogacara school, the basis of emptiness, the dependent nature, is explained as the thoroughly established nature that is empty of the imputed nature to be refuted; and in the Ratnagotravibhāga and other treatises, it is said that the nature of reality, the thoroughly established nature, is empty of the imputed nature to be refuted. Therefore, the thoroughly established nature is the nature of mind, and for the essence of this ultimate reality, there are no defilements to be discarded, nor are there new qualities that were previously absent to be newly accomplished, because it is primordially pure by its very nature and its qualities are spontaneously present. Since it transcends the establishment and refutation of faults and qualities, the ultimate reality is not empty of its own essence. Since the parts of the sudden deluded appearances of phenomena, the elaborations of grasping and being grasped, are not established in their essence, conventional truth is empty of its own essence. Since such a thing is different from the ultimate nature of reality, it is said to be empty of the essence of the ultimate other. The Ratnagotravibhāga says: "That which has the characteristic of distinctions is empty of adventitious stains; that which has the characteristic of no distinctions is not empty of the unsurpassed Dharma." In short, when measured from the perspective of conventional truth, it is the emptiness of negation and non-affirmation; when measured from the perspective of the ultimate reality, it is the emptiness of objects of other-contemplation apart from oneself. Now, if someone asks, what is the intention of saying that the ultimate reality is empty as its own essence? This refers to the fact that the ultimate reality is not established in the way it is grasped by the mind. For ordinary individuals, since the wisdom arising from hearing is very important, this is merely showing the gateway to the way of establishing it, because without hearing, one cannot think and meditate. It is also said in this way: "Wisdom is supreme, its basis is hearing, therefore hearing is supreme." The wisdom arising from thought does not merely remain at the level of hearing, but depends on the definite thought of the meaning of what is heard, therefore the wisdom of thought should be generated. The Wish-Fulfilling Treasury says: Thus hearing.
