It is unbearable. Angrily beating sentient beings, corresponding to afflictions, and proclaiming it as if it were Dharma. So it is said. Teaching only one precept to the dull-witted is: it is the precept not to abandon the aspiration mind just mentioned. This is a precept that all three types of Bodhisattvas, sharp, dull, and middling, must definitely learn. Because if the aspiration mind to seek perfect enlightenment for the sake of others is lost, it is more serious than the root downfall that causes the Bodhisattva vows to be broken. As it is also said in the Sutra of Advice to the King: "Great King, you have so many affairs and so much to do that you cannot learn everything from generosity to the perfection of wisdom. Therefore, Great King, you should always remember and meditate on the three things: aspiration, faith, and the desire to seek perfect enlightenment, whether you are walking, sitting, sleeping, waking, eating, or drinking. Rejoice in the virtues of others. After rejoicing, offer them to all the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Shravakas, and Pratyekabuddhas. After offering them, share them with all sentient beings. Then, dedicate them to unsurpassed enlightenment so that all sentient beings may perfect the Dharma of the Buddhas in one day. Great King, in this way, you will be able to govern the kingdom, and the affairs of the king will not be neglected, and the accumulation of enlightenment will be perfected." Also, in the Compendium it says: "If one practices the ten paths of virtuous action for hundreds of millions of kalpas, but develops a desire for a solitary conqueror Arhat, then the discipline will be flawed and the discipline will be broken. The generation of the mind of enlightenment is even more serious than the defeat of others." So it is said. Now, what is the reason for teaching the Bodhisattva's precepts in varying degrees according to the difference in faculties? Previously, in the ritual for taking vows, the tradition of Nagarjuna said that the aspiration and practice are taken together, but it is not certain that one must take everything completely. Although the precept of aspiration must be taken to perfect enlightenment, the precept of practice should be taken according to the gradual capacity of beings.

Because it is said that one can learn by merely guarding the precepts that one is able to guard, therefore, as it says in the Compendium of Trainings: If one practices one precept, even if one cannot guard other precepts, one will not fall. And, one should also take the vows in conjunction with one's own strength, and guard the vows. Therefore, the aspiration for Bodhicitta vows taken with the desire to attain perfect enlightenment for the sake of others, when entering, one should gradually combine with one's mental strength according to one's ability. To subdue and accept with mental strength is to be skilled in the methods of guiding those to be tamed. Second, the eighty branch offenses, etc. Because they are subtle, they are not explained here; one should consult the Compendium of Trainings. This means that, as it says in the Compendium of Trainings: Bodhisattvas should pacify all the present and future sufferings and unpleasantness of all sentient beings, etc. There are eighty branch offenses, namely, abandoning happiness and suffering, twenty-four kinds; abandoning practice, sixteen kinds; and from these divisions come eighty kinds. First, being able to pacify the suffering and unpleasantness of others but not pacifying them, and being able to generate happiness and joy but not generating them, these are the two bases of division. These two are further divided by the bases of body and mind into four, and then by the times of present and future into eight. Not striving in the three doors for these, not seeking beneficial causes and conditions, and not striving in the direction of antidotes; thus, dividing by the three doors of subsequent practice, there are twenty-four kinds. Second, based on not generating small antidotes to counteract great suffering and unpleasantness, these two are further divided by the births of this life and the next into four, and by the continuums of oneself and others into eight. Again, based on not abandoning small things for the sake of great happiness and joy, as before, dividing by birth and continuum, there are eight, making sixteen. Third, in this way, each of the forty is divided into two, temporary abandonment and permanent abandonment, thus dividing into eighty. The contents of "etc." are similar offenses scattered in various Mahayana sutras, such as the ten non-virtuous actions, the eight worldly dharmas, the eight wrong conceptions, etc.
