To not forget the mind of enlightenment, what are the four? They are: knowingly not speaking falsely, generating the perception of a teacher towards Bodhisattvas, abiding with a superior intention without deceit towards sentient beings, and firmly establishing all sentient beings in the Great Vehicle. Thus it is said. Secondly, the training for entering [the Bodhisattva path] involves explaining the root downfalls and shifting the blame for secondary offenses elsewhere. The first is: attachment to gain and respect, self-praise and disparagement of others, stinginess in not giving wealth and Dharma, harming others out of anger without stopping with scolding, and teaching with deceitful pretense of Dharma. These four are the root downfalls, the training for entering [the path]. Thus it is said. These four root downfalls are scattered in the Sutras, and were collected in the Bodhisattva Grounds by the noble Asanga. As it says there: "Those that the Blessed One taught scattered in various Sutras, are fully explained here in the mother of the Bodhisattva Pitaka." Thus it is said. These are four root downfalls, differentiated by arising from attachment, stinginess, anger, and delusion. Thus, with great clinging attachment to gain and offerings, or respect and seats, one praises oneself or disparages others who have gain and respect in order to obtain gain and respect. If anyone understands, it is like a place of defeat for a Bodhisattva, this is the first. To beggars who are suffering, poor, and without protectors, with great clinging attachment of stinginess, one does not give even a small amount of wealth or desirable things, or even if they are vessels, one does not give the sacred Dharma, this is the second. Even if one punishes with scolding for improper actions done by others, one does not stop with great clinging attachment of holding grudges, or one is not satisfied with merely speaking harsh words out of anger, but one harms others by beating and attacking them, this is the third. With great clinging attachment of delusion, one rejects the Bodhisattva Pitaka by falsely accusing it, such as saying "it is not the Buddha's word," or one approves of oneself or others who deceive and pretend to be Dharma, transforming what is not the sacred Dharma into Dharma and teaching it, this is the fourth. Thus, in the Twenty Verses it also says: "By arising from fierce afflictions, whoever destroys the vows, those four faults of his, should be understood as being like downfalls. Gain and respec

Due to attachment to places. Self-praise and disparagement of others, To those who are suffering and without protectors, Being stingy and not giving Dharma and wealth, Not listening even when others confess. Striking others with anger, Abandoning the Great Vehicle, And teaching what appears to be the true Dharma. Thus it is said. Here, the so-called "similar defeat" does not refer to the similar defeat of a Bodhisattva, but rather, just as it is a heavy offense for a Hearer's Bhikshu, these four are the root downfalls of heavy offenses for a Bodhisattva. Thus, from the perspective of intention, such as arising from attachment, there are four root downfalls. However, from the perspective of action, dividing each of the four offenses into two, they become eight, which is Jowo Je's view. Self-praise and disparagement of others are two, not giving Dharma and wealth are two, not listening even when others confess and striking others are two, abandoning the Great Vehicle and teaching what appears to be the true Dharma are two, making a total of eight. The Bodhisattva Grounds also says: Striking sentient beings with anger, and not listening even when others confess, thus separating the root downfalls. Secondly, the forty-six minor offenses are known elsewhere. As it is said, in the Twenty Verses, forty-six minor offenses are mentioned, namely thirty-four that are contrary to accumulating virtue, and twelve that are contrary to benefiting sentient beings. The first category has six subcategories, among which there are seven that are contrary to giving: Not making offerings to the Three Jewels. Following the mind of desire. Not respecting elders. Not answering questions. Not treating guests as one's own, Not accepting gold and so on. Not giving to those who seek the Dharma. Thus it is said. There are nine that are contrary to ethics: Abandoning those who have broken their vows. Not studying for the sake of others' faith. Doing very little for the benefit of sentient beings. If there is compassion, there is no non-virtue. Accepting wrong livelihood. Frivolous and extremely arrogant, etc. Thinking that one can cross samsara alone. Not abandoning non-fame. Not correcting even with afflictions. Thus it is said. There are four that are contrary to patience: Retaliating with harsh words, etc. Abandoning those who are angry. Preventing others from confessing. Following the mind of anger. Thus it is said. There are three that are contrary to diligence: Gathering retinues for the sake of gain and respect. Being lazy in
