Etc., do not eliminate. (Due to) attachment, relying on frivolous talk. Thus it is said. The three that contradict meditative concentration are: not seeking the meaning of meditative concentration, not abandoning the practice of meditative concentration, seeing qualities in the taste of meditative concentration. Thus it is said. The eight that contradict wisdom are: abandoning the Hearer Vehicle, striving for it even though one has self-nature, not striving (inwardly) but striving for externalist treatises, liking it even after striving for it, abandoning the Great Vehicle, praising oneself and slandering others, not going for the sake of the Dharma, slandering it and relying on letters. Thus it is said. Secondly, there are three categories, among which the four faults of falling away from benefiting others are: not going as a needed helper, abandoning the service of the sick, not eliminating suffering, and not showing lineage to the unrestrained. Thus it is said. The six faults of not benefiting others are: not returning benefits for what has been done, not eliminating the sorrow of others, not giving to those who desire wealth, not doing things for the retinue, not making (oneself) agree with the minds of others, not speaking praise of qualities. Thus it is said. The two faults of not cutting off evil are: not cutting off at the right time, not (using) magical powers (to cut off) sins, etc. Thus it is said. Thus, these forty-six, divided into three categories as appropriate, have been explained. In the commentary it says: If faults arise due to disrespect, negligence, and laziness, then they become faults of affliction. If faults arise due to forgetfulness, then they become faults of non-affliction. For mental confusion, there is no fault. Thus it is said. So, what are the faults that contradict the vow of right conduct? This does not need to be explained here, because in the Bodhisattva Grounds it says: The discipline of the Bodhisattva's vows is any of the seven types of individual liberation vows. Therefore, most of them are the same as the Hearer Vehicle. If the basis is a renunciate, then the four defeats of individual liberation are also root downfalls here, and other downfalls become faults of the Bodhisattva's limbs. However, the prescribed downfalls of renunciates are not listed as Bodhisattva downfalls in the Compendium of Trainings and so on, because it is considered that some lay Bodhisattvas do not necessarily have downfalls. Secondly, examining the difference between the downfalls of the two traditions is:

If someone asks, are the eighteen root downfalls and the four root downfalls that are spoken of contradictory? There are three different views on this. The first is the view of the teacher Jangchub Zangpo: The four of the Bodhisattva Grounds are the actual root downfalls, while the other eighteen root downfalls are the causes for severing the previously accumulated roots of virtue, rather than destroying the vows, so they are nominally root downfalls. This is what is said in the commentary on the "Twenty Vows." The second is the view of the teacher Abhayakaragupta: In the "Tathāgata's Intentional Ornament," it says that the four spoken of in the Vinaya Pitaka completely encompass these others. Therefore, the root downfalls of a Bodhisattva, like the Bodhisattva Grounds, are only four. Although those spoken of in the "Essence of Space Sutra" have the characteristics of root downfalls, they are considered to be included within the four. For example, the second root downfall of the king and ministers—abandoning the sacred Dharma, and the first root downfall of the beginner—teaching emptiness without training the mind, and the abandonment of the mind of enlightenment spoken of in the "Skillful Means Sutra," these three all belong to abandoning the Great Vehicle. The fifth root downfall of the king—persuading others to engage in the ten non-virtuous actions with wrong views, and the second root downfall of the beginner—turning away from complete enlightenment, these two both belong to teaching what appears to be the sacred Dharma. Thus, these five, and the division of the Sangha among the five heinous crimes, a total of six, are included in the fourth root downfall of the Bodhisattva Grounds. The third and fourth root downfalls of the beginner are denigrating others, the sixth is praising oneself, and the fifth is both praising oneself and denigrating others, these four are all included in the first root downfall of the Bodhisattva Grounds. The third root downfall of the king and ministers—striking renunciates, etc., and the other four heinous crimes besides dividing the Sangha, and destroying the cities of ministers, etc., these three are all included in the third root downfall of the Bodhisattva Grounds. The first root downfall of the king and ministers, and the third—robbing robes, and the seventh root downfall of the beginner—appropriating and stealing the property of the Three Jewels, and the eighth—giving the wealth of those who abide in peace to reciters and receivers, these six are all miserliness with wealth, and causing those who abide in peace to abandon peace, which is miserliness with the Dharma. Thus, these seven are all included in the second root downfall of the Bodhisattva Grounds. Therefore, he believes that there are no others besides these four root downfalls. Here, the wise ones believe that the third and fourth root downfalls of the beginner will cause the Great Vehicle
