Me, also causing others to hold (precepts) without special necessity. The fifth root downfall is: for the sake of gain and honor, being jealous of other Bodhisattvas who have gain and honor, speaking of their faults, whether true or false, and slandering them, and proclaiming that oneself has superhuman qualities even though one does not, causing others to hear. The sixth root downfall is: for the sake of gain and honor, without having realized it, saying that one has directly realized the profound emptiness, speaking such false superhuman lies, causing others to hear. The seventh root downfall is: like a king or other powerful person, being divided by the deceitful monks of this religion, relying on the powerful person, causing the monks to be punished with fines, and because of this, the monks stealing the property of the Three Jewels, offering it to the deceitful people, those deceitful people accepting it themselves, or offering it to the powerful person, if they take the property as their own, then both of these people will commit a root downfall. The eighth root downfall is: enacting evil laws that harm the monks who uphold the precepts, causing them to abandon the yoga represented by tranquility and insight, and seizing the possessions of the ascetic meditator monks, giving them or causing them to give them to the reciters, if the receiver also belongs to the side of the plunderer, then a root downfall will occur. These are: To sentient beings who have not tamed their minds, Speaking of the Dharma of emptiness, Those who have already entered the Buddha's path, Causing them to turn away from perfect Bodhi, Completely abandoning the Pratimoksha vows, And practicing the Mahayana Dharma, Regarding the vehicles of learning, etc., Thinking that they will not be abandoned. Also causing others to hold (wrong views), Proclaiming one's own qualities, For the sake of gain and respect, Slandering others with the trickery of verses, Saying "I have profound patience," Speaking such false lies, Causing monks to be punished, Giving offerings to the Three Jewels, Accepting offerings, Causing them to abandon tranquility and insight, And the possessions of proper abiding, Giving offerings to the reciters. These are the root downfalls, Are the cause of sentient beings falling into the great hell. Thus it is said. Secondly, with the similarity that appears there, everything to everything, in name there are eighteen kinds, in substance there are fourteen,

The so-called transgressions of ministers, subjects, and beginners are mainly stated because these situations are likely to occur to them. For example, the basis for transgression is the Bodhisattva vow. Whether or not one possesses it, there is no limitation to humans or non-humans here. However, in the context of the transgressions of beginners in the Compendium of Trainings, it says, "Son of a lineage or daughter of a lineage," which is in terms of what is likely to occur, just as actually specifying male or female. Therefore, it is impossible for fundamental transgressions to occur before one has entered the Bodhisattva conduct. So, whether it is an ordinary person, a human, or a yaksha, anyone who is a beginner with the Bodhisattva vow will have these transgressions. As stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "Those that occur frequently are referred to by their own names, in order to prevent the generation of fear. Everyone should avoid transgressions with each other." So, are these eighteen transgressions distinguished from the perspective of names or from the perspective of meanings? The sutra says that although they are divided into eighteen in terms of names, they can be summarized into fourteen in terms of meanings, because the first four fundamental transgressions of ministers and the first four fundamental transgressions of kings do not have different transgressions. Thirdly: Abandoning the mind of aspiration and engagement, these are fundamental transgressions. This means that if one generates the mind of the Lesser Vehicle, or abandons sentient beings from the heart, one has abandoned the mind of aspiration. As stated in the Secret Great Means Sutra: "Son of a lineage, a Bodhisattva abiding with the thought of hearers and solitary realizers, this is a heavy fundamental transgression of a Bodhisattva." Therefore, on top of the previous eighteen fundamental transgressions, adding the abandonment of the mind of aspiration makes nineteen. On top of that, as stated in the Jewel Heap Sutra, adding the abandonment of the mind of engagement and not applying it to virtuous deeds makes twenty fundamental transgressions. If we distinguish according to the order of the faculties of Bodhisattvas, there are three trainings. The eighteen or fourteen mentioned in the Essence of Space Sutra and the Compendium of Trainings are the uncommon fundamental transgressions of those with sharp faculties. For the trainings of those with medium faculties and above, four are taught. That is, the meaning of the Means Sutra is stated in the Compendium of Trainings: "The mind of enlightenment is completely abandoned, greed and miserliness are inexhaustible, one does not give to beggars, and when striving to create happiness, towards sentient beings"
