To go by... Driven by the whip of renunciation, keeping the city of liberation in mind, these are the four things. In short, as the great omniscient one said: Always with mindfulness, awareness, and carefulness, abandon non-virtue and accomplish the ocean of virtuous Dharma. Thus, generate the three—unfailing mindfulness, carefulness, and awareness—and avoid being stained by the root and branch downfalls that will be explained. Confess continuously six times day and night, and take the vow of bodhicitta according to the ritual. Or, at night, transform all sleep into virtuous sleep through any skillful means of wisdom. Divide the daytime into six parts and train accordingly. Now, how much of the bodhisattva precepts spoken of in the sutras should beginners train in? Beginners should train in all the bodhisattva precepts that are within their capacity, except for two things: doing things that they are unable to do, such as initiating, etc., and engaging in things that the Teacher has explicitly forbidden, which are said to be transgressions, and things that, although not forbidden, should not be practiced by beginners. As the Compendium of Trainings says: In short, there are no transgressions for actions that are not within one's capacity, because there is no point in establishing training for them since they are meaningless. For others, only hold onto the naturally blameworthy and those with faults. If one strives in a realm that is not within one's capacity, it will become a transgression, which need not be considered, as it is included in the general confession of sins, and thus one will be liberated from it. These, in short, are the essence of the bodhisattva's training, which can be extensively explained for countless eons. So it is. Second, the discipline to be protected has five aspects: the basis of division, the nature of division, the definite number, the order, and the benefits of training. The first is simply the bodhisattva's vows. The second is the three disciplines, as stated in the Jewel Heap Sutra: Light Protector, there are three types of bodhisattva's discipline: the discipline of vows, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings. Thus it is said. These three are also just divisions based on different aspects of the same essence. For example, a single jewel dispels darkness, gathers all desired wealth,

It is just like being beneficial. Third, the activities of Bodhisattvas are definitely for the benefit of both themselves and others. Because benefiting sentient beings matures the continuum of others, and gathering the two matures one's own continuum, the number is fixed at three. Fourth, the discipline of vows is mentioned first because it is the basis for the other two disciplines. After that, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings are placed in order, because without gathering virtuous dharmas in one's own continuum, one cannot benefit other sentient beings. Fifth, if one studies these three disciplines well, then when one attains enlightenment, one will obtain everything including abandonment, realization, and activities. Because the discipline of vows is the cause for obtaining the perfection of abandonment, the discipline of gathering virtuous dharmas is the cause for obtaining the perfection of realization, and the discipline of benefiting sentient beings is the cause for obtaining the perfection of activities. Wanting to explain the second (discipline) in detail, it is said, "The first of the three." Here there are three: abstaining from misdeeds, gathering virtuous dharmas, and benefiting sentient beings. The first is the discipline of abstaining from misdeeds. The discipline of abstaining from misdeeds has two aspects: its definition and its divisions. First, the definition is the constant mind of a Bodhisattva to abandon what is to be abandoned, including misdeeds and their imprints, for the sake of others. Second, it is divided into two: explaining the tenets of the two traditions separately, and examining the differences between the two. First, the tradition of Nagarjuna, which follows the Sutra of Akashagarbha and the Sutra of Skillful Means, was divided by Shantideva in the Compendium of Trainings; and the tradition of Asanga's Bodhisattva Grounds, which was divided by Chandragomin in the Twenty Verses on Vows. First, it shows the aspects of the root downfalls, and postpones the branch offenses to another place. First, the eighteen root downfalls are distinguished individually, the distinctions and summaries of the bases and downfalls, and abandoning the common aspiration and entering (the mandala) are taught as root downfalls. First, there are three: kings have five certainties, ministers have five certainties, and commoners have eight certainties. The first is: plundering the wealth of the Three Jewels and abandoning the Dharma, judging and demoting those who have discipline and those who break discipline, committing the five heinous crimes, and having wrong views are the five (root downfalls) of kings. The meaning is that the first root downfall is plundering the wealth of the Three Jewels, that is, the wealth of Buddha images or stupas, and the scriptures of the sacred Dharma and
