The conditions for speaking about the place: Whatever is dedicated to the Sangha, whether the Sangha is divided or not, gathered objects, fields, etc., regardless of whether the value is complete or not, if one seizes or steals with a strong motivation, or instigates others to do so, it becomes a defeat. If one steals from the Sangha, knowing that one belongs to that number, there is no downfall. The second root downfall is abandoning the true Dharma: Whether it is any of the three vehicles' teachings, the three pitakas, or any of the three trainings belonging to the Dharma of realization, saying that the teachings that show all good dharmas and the means to attain liberation are not the Dharma of liberation, abandoning it oneself or instigating others to abandon it. The third root downfall is cutting off practitioners with punishment: Whether it is an ordained person who has taken vows or not, whether it is a Bhikshu who keeps the precepts or not, whoever holds the appearance of an ordained person, with a mind of hatred, deprives them of their robes, or beats them, or imprisons them, or makes them return to lay life, or kills them, doing any one or more of the above oneself or instigating others to do so. The fourth root downfall is committing the five heinous crimes: Killing one's father, killing one's mother, killing an Arhat, and causing dissension in the Sangha, maliciously causing the Buddha to bleed, any of the above five heinous crimes. The fifth root downfall is holding wrong views: With the wrong view that "there is no cause and effect of karma," committing or instigating others to commit any of the ten non-virtuous actions. This is an action of the mind, so merely arising causes the root of virtue to be cut off and one falls into downfall. If one possesses the other limbs of engaging in non-virtuous actions, the sin becomes even more serious. As it is said in the Compendium of Trainings: "Stealing the property of the Three Jewels is considered a defeat. Abandoning the sacred Dharma is said by the Buddha to be the second. For a monk who has broken his vows, depriving him of his robes, beating and imprisoning him, causing him to return to lay life, committing the five heinous crimes, and holding wrong views," etc. The second is: Villages, regions, cities, towns, countries, etc., destroying them are also the five definite ministers. A village refers to a single household, etc., a region refers to the place where the four castes reside, a city refers to craftsmen.

A place with eighteen kinds of goods, a town is a place where many merchants gather, and a village is any of the great places like Champa, destroyed by the fire of hatred, etc. The word "also" is used to collect, that is, abandoning wrong views, the previous first four root downfalls, plus destroying towns, etc., the five are counted as one root downfall, so there must be five downfalls. Among them, the destruction of towns, etc., is also, the Buddha said, "It is a fundamental downfall." The third is: speaking emptiness without taming, advising to aspire to the Hearer, causing retreat from perfect enlightenment, advising to generate the mind of the Lesser Vehicle, abandoning individual liberation and learning the Great Vehicle, the Hearer Vehicle cannot abandon attachment, etc., causing them to abandon it, saying there is no result, praising oneself and disparaging others out of jealousy, selling oneself for gain and respect, cutting off the life of a monk by punishment, giving up enjoyment to those who recite scriptures, abandoning tranquility and causing abandonment of samadhi, these eight are certain to occur. This is to say that there are eight root downfalls for beginners. The first is: for all beings whose minds are not tamed, without examining their capacity, teaching profound emptiness, causing them to be afraid and abandon the mind of enlightenment, aspiring to the enlightenment of Hearers or Solitary Realizers, then the speaker will commit a downfall. If the other person also has the vow of entering the precepts, then he will also commit a downfall. The second downfall is: for those who have entered the path of becoming a Buddha, knowingly saying to them, you cannot attain the fruit of becoming a Buddha by practicing the six perfections, so aspire to the fruit of Hearers or Solitary Realizers, so that you will surely be liberated from samsara, this is causing him to retreat from perfect enlightenment. The third downfall is: for those of the Hearer lineage, who are learning individual liberation vows, or even if they have not ordained, want to learn, without a special need, saying to them, what is the use of you learning individual liberation vows? You should aspire to perfect enlightenment and learn the Great Vehicle, so that you can destroy the karma you have created with the power of the mind of enlightenment, this is advising him to learn the Great Vehicle. The fourth downfall is: the Hearer Vehicle cannot abandon afflictions such as greed, so you should learn the Great Vehicle.
