Third, after initiating, say, "Will spread the mat for the Sangha." If the Dharma robe has not been prepared beforehand, then first designate it, and carry out washing, dyeing, sewing, and other preparations. Second, on the morning of the sixteenth day of the middle autumn month, gather the Sangha and recite the mantra for designating the spreading of the mat three times. Then, holding the mat, sit down in front of each Bhikshu according to seniority, and inform them, "Spreading now." Third, when saying this, the Sangha should respond with "Spread well" and other similar words of approval. After spreading in this way, it should be cleaned from time to time, and the designated person should not leave the mat overnight, nor take it elsewhere, nor leave it without a guardian, and should protect it well. There are two ways to remove it: one is self-removal, which is when the mat is taken to another boundary, or when the designated Bhikshu sees the dawn rise in another boundary, or when everything belonging to that boundary no longer belongs to that boundary, and so on. The second is artificial removal, which is removal through ritual. There are also two types of this: one is the seasonal removal on the fifteenth day of the fourth month (Dawa, Tibetan calendar), and the other is the untimely removal before that due to circumstances. Second, regarding the basis of clothing: The Blessed One allowed the cloths obtained in summer to be cut and dyed into unsightly colors and then worn. Later, when the Venerable Gzugs can snying pos saw people living in this way and mistook them for Shravakas, he requested that marks be made, and the Blessed One then allowed the making of cut and sewn clothes. There are five aspects to this: the differences in materials, the method of making clothes, the classification of clothes, the characteristics of each classification, and how to wear them. The first is: not obtained through wrong livelihood, and the seven usable materials that are neither too bad nor too good, namely: Saga cloth (sa ga'i lhas), wool cloth, Shana cloth (bal gos sha na nyi 'og), cotton cloth and Zarma cloth (ras gos dang ni zar ma dang), Kotampa cloth (ko tam pa) and Dukula cloth (du ku la). It is said in the scriptures: "There are seven types of materials for Dharma robes." That is to say, it is not wool that is too long, or that has not been sheared, etc. Second, the method of making is: the usable material should be washed well, and the eight unusable dark dyes should be abandoned, and it should be dyed with three usable dyes. As it is said in the scriptures: "Madder, oak juice and indigo, medicinal wood juice and indigo wood madder, as well as orpiment and turmeric, these eight are considered dark dyes." And "Blue is indigo and turmeric juice."

These are the three colors that can be used. In general, a cloth cut with a cloth marker is needed; one should not wear cloth that has not been cut. After cutting with a knife, those that should be sewn should be sewn, and the cut and sewn clothes should be blessed as Dharma robes. This includes the lower skirt, upper garment, and layered robe. A Bhikshuni can use any cotton cloth, half-sleeved shirt, and sweat cloth. If possible, all of these should be cut and sewn; if not possible, they can be patched, and other than the layered robe, even if they are complete, they are acceptable. Some say that it is unreasonable to say that the layered robe must be cut and sewn, because in the mantra ritual for blessing materials, it says, "Or this is patched." The Extensive Commentary says, "If there are circumstances such as the Dharma robe being lost or the Dharma robe being burned, even for the layered robe, there is no need to cut and sew and bless it as a Dharma robe." Therefore, the method of cutting and sewing is: small pieces of cloth themselves are the basis of connection, the remaining parts should be even, looking in all directions from the center, and hemming, etc. Here, the term "格列布的འཕྲོ" is a translation error; some commentaries say it is "ཚལ་བུའི་འཕྲོ." This is the view of the Ornament of Stainless Explanation. Third, there are three types of classification: clothes for livelihood, extra clothes, and necessary clothes. Fourth, there are three definitions for each, first for clothes for livelihood, including: definition, classification, individual nature, and method of blessing. First is the definition: For a Bhikshu with vows, any usable, standard, and definite piece of clothing given for the purpose of livelihood can be blessed with its own name. Second is the classification: two types, those that actually exist and those that can form blessings. The first is: any of the thirteen standard items, namely: layered robe, upper garment, lower skirt, skirt, skirt lining, sweat cloth, sweat cloth lining, face cloth, pus cloth, lice pad, hair-cutting cloth, cushion, and large summer cloth. The second is: the mantra support for material blessing, separation, abandonment, and prevention. Clothes that can be used as materials for the three Dharma robes, and for laypeople
