The principle of completely severing any kind of object is the lineage of complete purification. Classification: There are early summer retreat and late summer retreat. The difference between the two: If it is the early summer retreat, it starts from the first day of the dark side of the wheat ripening month, which is the small month of the summer month; if it is the late summer retreat, it starts from the first day of the dark side of the bathing month, which is the autumn month, and promises to retreat for three months. As the Sakya text says: "From the first day of the wheat ripening month, the early summer retreat is the main one. From that bathing month, the first day is called the late summer." Also, as the Root Sutra says: "One should promise to retreat for three months." There are two aspects to this: the benefits and how to practice the summer retreat with benefits. The first is, as the Vinaya says: "Abandoning slander and harm to sentient beings, abandoning harm to life's activities, repairing damage, having few things to do, increasing hearing, etc., preventing the arising of firm distinctions." Thus it is said. The second is the ritual of making the promise and guarding the vows of the promise. The first is divided into two: preparation and the actual practice. Preparation is further divided into distant preparation and near preparation. The first is that there are no quarrelsome people, etc., and there are those who hold the treasury, etc., possessing the conditions for peaceful dwelling. For the monastery with a roof and doors, repair the damage, clean, etc., and prepare ten days or half a month in advance. The second is that if it is the early summer retreat, then on the fifteenth of the middle summer sixth month, if it is the late summer retreat, then after making the Uposatha on the fifteenth of the late summer seventh month, if there are places and seats to be assigned, then one or more monks should be appointed as the assigners. If not, then the one who distributes the wooden sticks should be appointed. The officer asks the appointee if he is willing. If he is willing, then he is appointed with a request and two karmas, and he is told what he should do. After that, in order to take the wooden sticks, the officer makes him happy with a karma of only making a request. The appointee distributes the wooden sticks and informs him of the number of recipients, as well as assigning places and seats, informing him that he must not return the seats and that he must promise to retreat tomorrow, etc. The second, the actual practice: on the morning of the sixteenth, in a place with a roof, in front of the monks, make the promise by reciting the mantra three times. In special cases, if there is no place, then making the promise by thinking "I will retreat here" also establishes the retreat.

Therefore, if one has not vowed to stay, not allowing one to leave is indeed staying. As it is said. Second, guarding the vows: without blessing, one should not let dawn break outside the boundary. As it is said, except for the special cases where there is no fault for transgressing due to circumstances, without blessing, once one exceeds the nearby boundary of the place where one has vowed to stay and dawn breaks outside, one will commit the fault of breaking the summer retreat. If one must go out, one should bless oneself; without permission, one can bless oneself and go out for one to seven days; if one obtains permission from the Sangha for forty days, then one can bless oneself for any period less than forty days as appropriate. It is said that the blessing of the seventh day can be repeated many times, but the total should not exceed forty days. The last six days do not accumulate blessings. The great Vinaya holder believes that what is said above refers to the fact that those seven days themselves do not accumulate blessings, but it is permissible to bless oneself for one or two days, etc. Third, the Karma of Pravāraṇā: When the Teacher Shakyamuni Buddha was residing in Shravasti, because the monks in a certain place had established a rule of silence and were observing the summer retreat, it was permitted to perform the Karma of Pravāraṇā for the Sangha observing the summer retreat through the three ways of seeing, hearing, and suspecting. The definition is: that which belongs to one of the three bases and makes the Dharma completely pure. It is the immediate category that arises based on the manner of the summer retreat. It is classified as: lawful and unlawful Pravāraṇā. The first is further divided into: distant preparation and near preparation. The first is: from seven days before, etc., one should understand the method of use, purify grudges, decorate temples, etc., and complete it before the thirteenth day, and determine the Dharma on the night of the fourteenth. The second is: if one has vowed to observe the early summer retreat, then on the Kartika month of mid-autumn, and if it is the later summer retreat, then on the fifteenth morning of any month of the Mrigashirsha month of late autumn, all the Sangha gather, prostrate to each other, and ask for forgiveness for violations during the summer retreat. From the third series of continuations to the confession of the Shramaneras, it is performed like the Uposatha, and then the Shramaneras are separated, and the wishes of those who cannot attend the assembly, etc.
