These are just the benefits. The benefits of the Pratimoksha vows. That is the benefit of becoming the foundation of all good qualities. First, the benefit is taken to avoid illness and the king's punishment, although it can eliminate some obstacles, but this is the precept of protecting from fear. Taking it for the sake of the next life is called the precept of aspiration, even if one obtains the happiness and fruit of gods and humans, it is not liberation. It means that taking it to be freed from illness and the king's punishment etc. in this life is the precept of protecting from fear, and taking it to only obtain the happiness and fruit of gods and humans in the next life is called the precept of aspiration. They can each eliminate obstacles in this life, and only obtain the happiness and fruit of gods and humans in the next life. However, since it is not taken by the mind of renunciation, it is not a method of liberation from samsara. Second, if one has the precept of definite renunciation, like the biography of Dga'bo, one can obtain the fruit of Arhat. It means that the precept taken with the intention of definitely renouncing samsara, any of the three, Nirvana, is the Pratimoksha vow, no matter which of the eight kinds of precepts it is. Because it is the precept that definitely liberates from samsara. If one has this precept, even if one only studies a small precept, it will become the cause of Nirvana, so one can effortlessly obtain the fruit of Arhat. For example, the younger brother Dga'bo was initially forced to take the vows by the Buddha's command. After that, the Buddha guided him with miraculous powers and showed him the heavenly maiden, because he wanted to be born with her, he worked hard to study, and the previous vow continuum became the precept of aspiration. After that, the Buddha showed him the suffering of hell, and he generated renunciation. From then on, it became the Pratimoksha vow, because he studied well, he obtained the fruit of Arhat. Not only that, but the temporary benefits are also, acting like Brahma, is the object of praise by the wise, possessing the seven noble riches, dying without regret, in the next life because he has protected the fallen sins, he can freely employ the beings of Paranirmitavasavartin. The protector of the Sanghavasesa sins is reborn in the Paranirmita heaven, the protector of the Sthulatyaya sins is reborn in the Tushita heaven, the protector of the Prayascittika sins is reborn in the Atapa heaven, protecting the expiatory sins and misdeeds etc., one will be reborn in the heavenly realm residing on Mount Sumeru, and ultimately

Through relying on pure ethics without faults, one accomplishes single-pointed concentration. Through that, one cuts the root of samsara, the clinging to self, with non-conceptual wisdom, and thus attains the unsurpassed liberation of nirvana. As the Sakya school says: "The wealth of excellent mantras is complete, one is born in a pure palace of the gods, one obtains concentration and renunciation, this discipline is a great fruit." Also, as it says in the Sutra of Great Affection for Monks: "Whoever perfectly guards the precepts, that person has a beautiful form, dwells near discipline, and has faith in the precepts. Even in one day, that person accumulates immeasurable heaps of merit and accomplishes the fruit of Buddhahood." Also, as it says in the Root Tantra of Medicine: "Monks, if you practice ethics, concentration will abide for a long time. If you practice concentration, wisdom will abide for a long time. If you practice wisdom, the mind will be completely liberated from desire, hatred, and ignorance." Thirdly, the later qualities such as taking refuge in the Three Jewels are superior. The former is the common path of the latter, and the beings to be tamed by bodhicitta and mantra are also the same. Therefore, it is the basis of all qualities. As it says: "Whoever goes for refuge to the Three Jewels, they will quickly become enlightened." Thus, the benefit of holding the Three Refuges cannot be compared to even a hundred or a thousand times the benefit of the vows of a complete layperson, a novice monk, or a fully ordained monk. The later is more excellent than the former. The former is the path and stepping stone of the latter, so it is a common path to enter in stages. Therefore, those vows of individual liberation are also similar in that they can serve as the basis for the vows of bodhicitta and mantra. For that reason, the ethics of renunciation are the basis for generating the qualities of scripture and realization of all vehicles, and the fundamental support for increasing merit. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "Ethics are said to be the basis for all qualities, like the earth that produces what is and is not." In short, in the past, when the Dharma was flourishing, for countless years...

Compared to maintaining the entirely pure precepts, in this time of the decline of the teachings, it is said that maintaining just one precept for a day and night is of greater benefit. The Samadhiraja Sutra states: For as many eons as there are grains of sand in the Ganges, with a pure mind, offering food and drink, umbrellas, banners, and garlands of lamps, serving countless Buddhas. When the sacred Dharma is utterly destroyed, and the Sugata's teachings are about to disappear, practicing one precept day and night, this merit is far superior to that. Therefore, it is so. Thus, having reached the end, when summarizing the chapter, it is said: This is the second division of the Pratimoksha discipline. That is to say, this treatise has five chapters, and this is the commentary on the second chapter, which is the division of the Pratimoksha into the discipline of the Shravakas and the common practice of the teachings. Here it is said: Abiding on the snowy mountain of the supreme gathering, showing the five faces of fearless acceptance and rejection, the great teacher who shows the form of the Dharma-discipline lion, is offered with this well-spoken word that follows the scriptures and reasoning. By drinking the nectar of the wise words with faith and diligence, may the power of wisdom greatly increase, and in the future, may one hold the sacred Dharma well, and may one obtain the glory of giving whatever is desired to beings!
