As it is said: Only those who possess other qualities have the fortune of the Bodhisattva vows, not otherwise. Secondly, if one observes these eight until the end of life, even if one is a Gomi layperson, the Sarvastivadins do not acknowledge it. Vasubandhu considers this to be the view of the Sthavira school. That is to say, a Gomi layperson is one who undertakes to observe the eight precepts for as long as life lasts. Although this is not mentioned in the Vinaya of the Sarvastivadins, Vasubandhu considers it to be the view of the Sthavira school. Because the term "Gomi layperson" is heard from the oral transmission of the Sthaviras, and it is not seen that the Sugata himself spoke of it. Therefore, although this is the case, it is mentioned in the Mahayana Pitaka. For example, it is said in the Ratnakuta Sutra that the prince with great compassion took the eight precepts until the end of his life. Therefore. Thirdly, the precepts of a layperson are threefold: identifying the five things to be abandoned by a layperson; explaining the divisions of laypersons based on the number of ways of observing them; and showing the precepts that are in accordance with them. Firstly: killing, stealing, lying, engaging in sexual misconduct out of desire, and abstaining from intoxicants are the vows of a layperson. Therefore, the things to be abandoned by a layperson are of two types: root and branch. There are four roots: killing, taking what is not given, engaging in sexual misconduct out of desire, and lying. These require a human being as the object. If the object is not a human being, it is only a fault belonging to the root, but it is not the actual root, so the vow is not broken. Here, instead of placing celibacy as a precept, sexual misconduct is placed as a precept because it is easier for householders to observe, etc. As it is said in the Abhidharmakosha: Because sexual misconduct is extremely base, and it is easy to abstain from sexual misconduct, therefore celibacy is not practiced. The branch is abstaining from intoxicants, because if one does not abstain from intoxicants, one cannot observe the other precepts. It says: In order to protect the other precepts besides intoxicants, intoxicants are prohibited. Secondly, from that are divided the views of the Sravaka school, and the views of other schools besides that. Firstly: according to the number of vows one wishes to take, one practices one, several, most, or all. One abandons one, two, three, or five.
