For the sake of declaring. Therefore, as soon as the declaration of the action is completed, the vows arise there, that is, it is accomplished in the third part of whatever the last declaration is. Because it is said. At that time, that doer also becomes a Khenpo, that is, he becomes one when the meaning is accomplished. Because the upasaka etc. become Khenpos only by the accomplishment of the meaning. Fourth, the way to protect what has been obtained without losing it. There are two, teaching and explanation. First, the brief explanation is: In the meantime, protect what has been obtained without losing it. That is to say, it is not enough to obtain the vows for the first time through the ritual of making the unobtainable obtainable. One must learn to protect what has already been obtained in the meantime without losing it, because if it is not protected, there are faults, and if it is protected, it has great benefits. In the Sutra of Great Affection for Monks, it is said: Some people's morality is happiness, and some people's morality is suffering. Having morality is happiness, and breaking morality is suffering. Because it is said. Second, the detailed explanation has two parts: the direct explanation of the precepts of what to take and what to abandon in detail, and the indirect explanation of the summary of its compatibility. The first has two parts: the precepts belonging to the side of the householder and the precepts belonging to the side of the ordained. The first has three parts: the precepts of refuge, the precepts of Uposatha, and the precepts of upasaka. First, the precepts of taking refuge in each of the three uncommon jewels, and the common precepts of all three. The first is: The precepts of refuge are the three uncommon ones: Do not seek other refuges, abandon harming sentient beings, do not associate with heretics, and cultivate respect for each. That is to say, there are two aspects to this: negation and affirmation. In the precepts of negation, after taking refuge in the three jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the respective precepts are in order: Do not rely on other worldly gods for refuge, abandon harming sentient beings, and do not associate with heretical friends. If one contradicts these, one abandons the refuge of the respective three jewels. In the Nirvana Sutra, it is said: Whoever takes refuge in the Buddha is a true upasaka, and at no time does he take refuge in other gods. Taking refuge in the noble Dharma, harming and injuring

To be free from the mind of non-Buddhists, also to take refuge in the Sangha, and not to associate with non-Buddhists. These are the instructions for practice. Regarding the support of the Buddha's body, even a fragment of a tsa-tsa (Sanskrit: sāñcā), regarding the support of the Dharma, even a single letter, regarding the image of the Sangha, even a piece of cloth with a yellow patch sewn on it, one should regard them as that deity and treat them with respect. Secondly, one should not abandon the Three Jewels even for the sake of life and rewards; even if it is very important, one should not seek other means; one should not interrupt the constant offerings, and one should take refuge oneself and lead others to take refuge; one should prostrate to the Buddhas in whatever direction one goes. These five are what Jowo Atisha considers to be common instructions. That is to say, even for the sake of life and kingdom, one should not abandon the Three Jewels; no matter how important it is, one should rely on the Three Jewels and not seek other worldly means; because one constantly remembers the qualities, one should not interrupt the constant offerings; because one understands the benefits, one should take refuge oneself and lead others to take refuge; one should prostrate to the Buddhas and their images in whatever direction one goes, there are five in total. Secondly, there are instructions on the actual practice of temporary fasting, and how to become a layperson if it is made a permanent rule. The first point is: abandoning the four root [downfalls] is the four branches of morality; abandoning alcohol is the branch of mindfulness; high and large beds, dancing garlands, etc., and afternoon food, these three are the branches of asceticism, which is the vow of fasting. These eight branches are not permanent, so they are not the basis of merit, therefore the Pratimoksha is only the seven types that possess the characteristics. That is to say, as stated in the Treasury [Abhidharmakosha]: the branch of morality, the branch of mindfulness, the branch of asceticism, are four, one, and three respectively. Thus, abandoning the four root downfalls such as unchaste conduct is the branch of morality; abandoning alcohol is the branch of mindfulness; high and large beds, dancing garlands, etc., and untimely food, these three are the branches of asceticism. These eight branches are temporary precepts undertaken for the duration of a day and a night, they are not permanent precepts, therefore they cannot be the basis of the merits of the higher precepts. Therefore, those who possess the characteristics that are the basis of the merits of the higher [precepts] are definitely the seven types of Pratimoksha vows. As stated in the Lamp for the Path: the seven types of Pratimoksha, the constant vows
