Also, the noble Asanga, in his commentary on the Uttaratantra, said, "The Blessed One said that all sentient beings possess the essence of enlightenment." Regarding what is said there about all sentient beings, they can be summarized into four types: ordinary beings, Arhats, those in training, and Bodhisattvas. These, in the realm of the uncontaminated, are shown to be impure by four, one, two, and two, respectively, according to their order. So it is said. Thirdly, incidentally, how the Mantrayana tradition views it: the nature of the ground-continuum, a general explanation of its meaning, how it surpasses the Sutra tradition, and the categories of names, are the four points. The first point is: the Suchness that is not stained by even a slight impurity, the mind-essence of bliss-emptiness union, its own nature is immutable, all-pervading samsara and nirvana, the all-encompassing nature. The second point has two aspects: teaching and explanation. The first point is: the ground-continuum is known as the spontaneously accomplished mandala of intrinsic nature, the immutable great bliss and the mind-essence of emptiness possessing all aspects are indivisible, and it is spontaneously accomplished and completely perfect as the great mandala of the three kayas inseparable from the beginning, therefore it is called the Great Perfection. It itself is the wisdom that pervades samsara and nirvana, therefore it is called the general form of all wisdoms. Thus, in the 'Oral Instructions of Manjushri,' it says: 'The Great Perfection is the general form of wisdom.' The second point has two aspects: the actual and the manner of pervasion. The first point is from the 'Magic Net': 'Self-born wisdom, Bodhicitta, the essence of Bodhi is unconditioned, adorned with blazing qualities of conventional truth, the spontaneously accomplished unsurpassed mandala.' And from the 'Guhyagarbha Tantra': 'Without bonds, without liberation, the Buddha Dharma spontaneously perfected from the beginning.' Therefore, the state of being without bondage or liberation, self-awareness, the nature of self-born wisdom, great bliss, Bodhicitta, the essence of reality inseparable from the ultimate truth, free from the realm of conceptual activity, is the ground-continuum, the essence of the Sugata. It is unchanging, without increase or decrease at all times, therefore it is unconditioned, of a permanent nature. Without seeking, all the qualities of the result are spontaneously accomplished and perfected, therefore it abides from the very beginning in the great mandala of the Victorious Ones. In the extensive texts, it says: all conceptual thoughts

Non-basis. The basis of meaning without self-nature. That is called the realm of Dharma. Suchness wisdom. Thus it is said. In the Thuk Thik: The basis, the abiding awareness, the essence, the nature, and compassion, these three are the essence of the Victorious Ones. It is said that the three bodies reside spontaneously. Thus it is said. In the Dung Yik Chen: The basis is the nature of reality, its essence and nature are empty. The mother who gives birth to all Buddhas. There are three kinds of distinctions: essence, nature, and compassion. Thus it is said. Moreover, it is called the basis because it becomes the basis of both samsara and nirvana through the action of being grasped or not grasped by the condition of skillful means. In the Three Successive Ones: All the phenomena of the two terms, are called the basis because they arise without exception. Thus it is said. The meaning of these words. The Dharmakaya essence of the Sugata, the state of being without bondage or liberation. It is called the basis continuum, because it becomes the basis of both samsara and nirvana through the action of realization and non-realization. Because the nature is unchanging and continuous. The second is: In the Ocean: From the beginning, the fully enlightened Buddha Dharma, because it abides in all sentient beings. The spontaneously accomplished mandala of the Victorious Ones, abides in the bodies of all sentient beings. Thus it is said. In the Hevajra Tantra: This is great wisdom, all always abides in the body. The essence of reality and non-reality is the chief. The way of being two and not two. It abides pervading the stable and the moving. Thus it is said. Therefore, the self-born wisdom, the basis continuum, that very essence of the Thus-Gone One, abides in all phenomena encompassed by the stable, the moving, samsara, and nirvana, like oil pervading sesame seeds. Thus it is said. In the Jeweled Array: Like oil spontaneously present in sesame seeds or mustard seeds. In the appearance of sentient beings' bodies. The seed of the Thus-Gone One, appears with harmonious light. Thus it is said. In the Refutation: The wisdom of one's own lineage abides in the body, like oil in sesame seeds. The radiance and brilliance of the body, is pervaded by the moisture of wisdom. Thus it is said. In the Self-Arisen: The intention of the truly enlightened Buddha, in the self-continuum of all sentient beings, abides in the form of body and wisdom. Thus it is said. The meaning of these words. The basis continuum, the Dharmakaya, is impartial and all-pervading wisdom, because it pervades all that is stable and moving.
